Genuine question. Is it the government’s responsibility to provide PPE to privately run care homes?

It's the government's responsibility to provide adequate PPE for, and the distribution of it to, all front line workers ... just as it's the government's responsibility to enforce lockdowns etc ... PPE works a lot better than a "Care" badge ...

That baffled me as well. I know the Care Home system is complex in the UK with council placements in many. I assumed that this might be something to do with it being declared a Pandemic and emergency situation in UK, which then means the government becomes responsible for all coordination of PPE distribution and testing. It would be very strange if the government was responsible for this on a normal basis.

My mum is in a privately run care home. They have sent a mail out requesting some additional funds for PPE?

Very much my take ... it's the government that has enforced closure of the Care homes to all but care workers ... as such it is the government's responsibility to ensure those care workers have the right equipment to protect both themselves and the most vulnerable in society.

They shouldn't have to do that, but it might be that they are looking to source it privately if there is no sign of the state supply turning up ...

That said, there are also some unscrupulous owners who won't overlook a chance to make additional money ... many of the staff at my mother-in-law's home are on minimum wage ...

Coronavirus-related deaths were 41% higher in England and Wales than the government's official figures in the week to 10 April.

If they want the staff to look after the sick residents rather than transferring them to NHS hospitals then very much so.

Its not an issue in terms of the additional funding and if they are being proactive then great.
I cannot find any definitive information saying it’s the responsibility of the government to supply this?

There’s definitely a responsibility in a pandemic for the government to step in and help source PPE for a variety of different organisations.

In terms of distribution I know a lot of the work for organising distribution for the NHS is done by the NHS, both on a local and national level. Not sure how it works with care homes.

All I can find is a department of health guidance document stating that the government has ordered the release of PPE to designated wholesalers for forward sale to social care providers that are registered with the care quality commission?

My understanding is no . In normal times i'm 99.99% sure that the PPE provision is the responsibility of the Home however at present doubt they could
    a) find a regular supply
    b) afford it
as the type of PPE required is far above normal requirements both in complexity and amounts. Since it is fairly clear that the chance of a hospital accepting a Care/Nursing home resident is incredibly slim at present they need as much support as possible atm .

I don't really care who is meant to be responsible from a legal standpoint.

It's societies duty to protect the vulnerable and those who can't protect themselves. This needs to be done on a national scale at this time and that means the government.

The only reason we have this question is because so much has been outsourced for profit.

    It’s impossible to say. Impossible.

We hear a lot about the capacity not being an issue. I wonder how many people missed out on a life saving procedure to maintain that capacity.

that is why the "cost" of this will only be shown in the number of excess deaths in next few years .
