It is true, the things on that list are copied and pasted from the WHO website, on the 29th of Feb their advice was still that there was little risk, no reason for international travel or trade to stop and not until March 12th did they declare it a pandemic (they've made a right balls-up of the whole thing).

Are you not in danger of blaming the WHO for China's unwillingness to share the true scale of their pandemic?

I certainly think they accepted the information from China too readily, but they were painfully slow updating their info even when it became apparent that the issue was rapidly going downhill.

Bob here from the LGBT Arkansas Backwoods Branch (Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump). I wholeheartedly back the thoughts and actions of our Great President and Saviour, Donald J. Trump, who has rightly and justifiably withdrawn funding from WHO for their inconsistency and desultory stance in handling this crisis. Our President's great, stupendous even, straight as an arrow approach from Day One is an inspiration to all right thinking freedom lovers in our great nation and throughout the World.

That's fine but we should never lose sight of the fact that "experts" may not be apolitical.

Very true, and sometimes their expertise is not in the field they are commenting on. Add in the desperation for funding and citations to keep tenure, and the habit of policy advisers to use selective interpretations of the scientists reports when informing the policy makers and you realise you need to dig deep to find what the experts are actually saying, and it's often that they recommend they get funded for further research.

In most fields, for every expert that gets cited, there are often an equivalent number if not more pushed into the wilderness for having an alternative position. The so called '97% consensus' being a case in point. Consensus is not science, and politics has certainly pressed its influence in key areas.

Take the time to look at the situation reports, very interesting how different to the news reports they are.

    WHO - SITUATION REPORT - 3 - 23 JANUARY 2020

The initial source of 2019-nCoV still remains unknown. However, it is clear the growing outbreak is no longer due to ongoing exposures at the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan; as in the last one week, less than 15% of new cases reported having visited Huanan market.
There is now more evidence that 2019-nCoV spreads from human- to- human and also across generations of cases.
There have been very few reports of hospital outbreaks or infections of health care workers, which is a prominent feature of MERS and SARS.
WHO assesses the risk of this event to be very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level.

Interesting comments implying just this from the editor of the Lancet today.

"Medical advisers have been accused of lying to the British public about the coronavirus pandemic to prop up the government.

Richard Horton, the editor of medical journal The Lancet, criticised the government’s advisers, accused them of telling “manifest untruths”.

In a tweet posted on Sunday evening, he wrote: “When you see supposedly independent medical advisors to government tell what are manifest untruths to shore up a political regime whose credibility is rapidly collapsing, you have to say that those advisors have lost their integrity and our trust.”"

    Made me smile...

Jane Raison 3 April at 23:46

    Views expressed are my own.

As someone with a Masters in disease control, you can only imagine the sheer hell on earth that Facebook is for me at the moment.

From Chantelle who has impressively made the leap from bath bomb retailer to consultant virologist in a matter of weeks and can tell you exactly why the government and their experts are wrong, to Bob who claims to have secret intel from a secret government group on the secret programme of secret treatment measures that the government are definitely bringing in at 3pm next Thursday, only it’s a secret, but he’s posting it on Facebook so he feels like 007, to Steve who thinks it’s all a load of bollocks and if he wants to wander round town he bloody well can cos he doesn’t feel sick and why the hell is ‘spoons shut cos his granddad didn’t fight the nazis for him to be told to stay inside even if pornhub premium is now free for a week.

I tried as hard as I could in my studies and in my work in disease control to avoid viruses like the plague (see what I did there?) because they are absolute bastards. Bacteria are so much easier to control and parasites are positively dreamy. Viruses are utter bastards (did I mention that?) because you can do almost naff all to them. To deal with viruses you have to deal with the viral vector instead. That’s the weak point for a virus. Its vector. Only in this case the vector is humans, bloody stupid, arsehole humans like Chantelle, Bob and Steve. Viral control is about psychology more than it’s about medicine and that’s what’s scary about it. Giving everyone a pill is easy, getting everyone to listen and change their behaviour is a bloody nightmare.

The virus is just chugging along being a virus, it’s living it’s best life #livelaughcough. You can’t ignore it out of existence, scaremonger it away or become magically immune by gargling with vinegar, donning a decorating mask or sticking a live frog up your arse and swanning round town like an immortal dickhead. You have to actually do what you’re being told to do. YOU.

YOU. You can stop it. Do what you’re told. Stay the heck inside. Stop thinking you’re an expert, stop thinking you know best, stop thinking you’re a rebel, stop trying to be a special little cupcake. Be a sheeple. Do what you’ve been asked to do. This is NOT your time to shine sweet cheeks, this isn’t your opportunity to over throw the system and save mankind. It’s your opportunity to sit tight, watch Netflix and save mankind.

The virus does not give a **** about you. You’re just a stepping stone, a host, a nameless, faceless breeding ground and launchpad. All it gives a **** about is reproducing and finding new hosts. Don’t let it. Break the chain. Shut the hell up. Stop spreading fake news, fear and gossip. Let the experts be the experts and do what they tell you because all the googling, all the conspiracy theories, all the spoilt princess routines and all the voodoo bullshit in the world is not going to help you one little bit. This is not about YOUR ego, it’s about OUR survival. So act for the good of us all and do what you’re being asked to do.

Stay inside, protect the NHS, save lives.

One of the dangers is that if left unchecked, the nonsense gets taught in schools and colleges. There's a political element to that too, so it's not for here.
