Funnily enough that's similar to me... except it took until the 3rd year in my placement stuck in a research lab (The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research no less) to realise the same as you. Took 3 years ffs! Always knew you were sharper than me Bobby... and not bcos you're Chinese... you utter **** <wah>

Looking at ONS statistics the weekly deaths this year compared to last year for the country as a whole was lower than average until two weeks ago when it has understandably gone up well above average. But a quick glance at the figures would suggest there can’t have been 7500 care home deaths due to covid on top of 15k+ deaths in hospitals from covid because you’d expect there to have been around 22.5k additional deaths over the period and that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’d need to read more to actually take a proper opinion on it but with a quick glance at the figures I’m not sure how they’ve got to 7500 separate to the hospital deaths.

One care home in Luton has now lost 25% of it's residents ... one in Ayrshire has lost 20 residents ... 4 in a day ... 40% of total covid deaths in Scotland are in care homes ...

I wasn’t suggesting they would, I was just questioning what data they were using. Before realising that the ONS data was only to the 3rd of April so could have risen enough since then for the figure to be accurate <ok>

Given there are over 3000 care homes in the country it isn’t that surprising if the figures are accurate. All it takes is for one person to bring it into a care home and a load of very vulnerable people are then exposed to virus which effects that group worst.

The first ONS report up to 27th March showed 20 deaths in Care Homes. A week later up to 3rd April showed a 10 fold increase to 219 iirc.

The following week's data (up to 10th April) will be out tomorrow so no need to speculate. What is worth noting though is not always the amount but the rate of increase.

As for the data in terms of understated figures. The NHS data is limited whereas the ONS takes roughly 11 days to gather all deaths information for any given date and is far more accurate. So even ignoring Care Home deaths, say for example the NHS reports today that for 19th April the total deaths in hospitals was 16,000 in about 11 days the ONS may very well report the actual figure for deaths in hospitals on 19th April was actually 20,000.

**** me were experiments boring. I like the theory and how things work and i thought year i'll be a researcher for cancer or something. a third way through year 1 and standing there pipetting **** and waiting hours for something to boil to then think you need to repeat this **** a million times to get some colour change to be 99.9% sure the same **** happens isn't my cup of tea. Oh and the cleaning, so much cleaning.

No I said I couldn’t see what data they were basing it off because the latest ONS data i’d seen didn’t match up to the figure being given.

Also you could have done a quick google search and had about five news sources with the article to post you lazy **** <laugh>

So true <laugh> We were just repeating a lot of tedious mindless experiments at times. Even the novelty of liquid nitrogen wore off after a while!

Having to read Nature and other journals I can't even remember the names of and as a first year undergrad looking round the lecture theatre guessing which **** understood half of it <laugh>

Here the rich kids in the paying schools are all doing online learning while the less-privileged children in the state schools are also learning from home but the teachers send a list of chapters/pages of their school books they have to read by WhatsApp to their parents phone, plus a photo of questions they have to answer on it, the kids copy out the questions and write the answers in their school books and then the mums photograph it with their phones and WhatsApp the image back to the teachers, who marks them and sends their marks and any corrections back in the same way. The Indonesian equivalent of the BBC has also been assisting by showing cartoons/lessons etc with questions after, that the kids have to answer and then send to their teacher.

Its fairly humbling when you see what they are doing to try and ensure that the childrens' educations are not too badly affected.
