I wouldn't put it past the government to make wearing face masks on public transport compulsory on 25 May. It took them months before deciding that testing the elderly who were discharged from hospital into care homes for coronavirus was necessary.

It's possible that they're holding back on making it compulsory until they can be sure of adequate supplies. There's currently a global shortage I believe.

The latest estimate for deaths in care and nursing homes is 4,000. Until last week the government didn't think testing the elderly and vulnerable that were discharged from hospital deserved testing for coronavirus. This has nothing to do with hindsight. It's a major failure by an incompetent government.

The use of public transport will increase by, what, a couple of million? How often will we need to change our face masks? Will the demand for masks be lower in the NHS by May? If they can't supply the NHS now how are they going to find millions more in just over a month?

Why didn't the doctor's nurses or nhs use some common sense and just do it? Or is it only the government who do testing?

And a second thought, why didn't the care home tell them to bugger off with the potentially virus infected patient?

It's an issue being faced by all governments across the world, but as far as i understand it, the masks the NHS use on the covid ward are different grade to the ones Joe Public would use, but the stocks need to be prioritised and protected. There's been plane loads of PPE coming in, plus factories repurposed.

The situations in other countries that are easing restrictions will help inform the decisions here. According to some reports, the scientific advice to the government hasn't been all that it could be.

Clear evidential link between activity and virus rate shows that porn increases the infection rate.

    Government help....
I somehow find this sickening. Its not a lot of stock in reality, but surely this sticks. I have to add, I work in the insolvency industry and I make a living from business failures, but I would not auction these.

You can access them DMD... the problem is shipping. If you saw the BA flight with the masks on, that was probably 4 million paper masks that are good for about 1 hour. As soon as they have any moisture they're useless. The ~KN95 mask is more durable and is good for a day, maybe 2. Getting them out of China is impossible and shipping rates are going up 10% daily.

The secondary issue of businesses ramping up and developing to produce the masks is raw materials...

I read yesterday 84% of care homes are privately owned... draw your own conclusions.... and second as was made very clear yesterday whilst this is a government issue its much more to do with 'direction' of PHE ...

Boris Johnson [edit whoops, Johnson wasn't at the first 5 Cobra meetings called to discuss the virus] and whoever was in the room with him at the time decided who was going to be tested and who wasn't. The testing was done by the NHS labs but the decision on who to test was made by the government.

Do you really expect the low paid manager of a care home to refuse to free up an hospital bed when the government was commissioning 3 new hospitals to cope with the virus?

Excellent interview of Oxford University vaccinologist Professor Sarah Gilbert by Andrew Marr in his morning show today.

    Started around 9:15.

Gilbert wasn't afraid to tell it as it is. Quite refreshing in the current climate.

Sounds promising development, but as usual, caution is necessary.
