The Imperial College bods record on model predictions is hardly anything to write home about. Just ask the mad cows.

At present, nobody really knows, but the reality is, without a vaccine, we're all just hiding. Initially that was to buffer the strain on the NHS, at a cost to their planned clients and the economy. That buffer now appears to be in place.

The most serious rift is between the health establishment and the politicians, who cannot order NHS bosses to do anything since the Lansley reforms gave the health service operational independence nearly a decade ago. Sir Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, was labelled “a megalomaniac, micromanaging control freak” by one senior figure this weekend. He is blamed for failing to get a grip on the PPE supply, for refusing to let private labs take on testing work (a
decision reversed last week) and for a system that has repeatedly given incorrect and overly optimistic information on progress to ministers.

A health department source said: “NHS England and Public Health England were reluctant to relinquish their power to private labs. Stevens has this absolutely illogical fear of anyone else getting any say over what happens in the NHS.”

The PPE had been “out of date in the warehouse”, the source added. “It should have been checked and updated as part of the resilience planning. We were being contacted by manufacturers saying, ‘I can make tests. I can make PPE.’ That all went into the machine, but the machine is not ours; it belongs to Public Health England and NHS England.”

Heard that last night it had 16 patients, and that other areas of the uk were running at 50% occupancy of ICU beds. It was some bloke on the SKY news press review.

Also mentioned the ventilators, those from JCB and McLaren (?) didn't work and others promised never turned up.

I don't know about that but it would be worth telling Donald Trump - he was criticised for calling this outbreak the Wuhan Flu and Chinese Flu but he obviously didn't know that the Spanish Flu appears to have originally started in the USA. So, if your suggestion is correct, then we all know who to blame for all subsequent outbreaks. He'd probably claim it as another beautiful first though.

I've never been impressed by Public Health England - they took over the excellent cancer screening service at some point around 2010 and have mis-managed the process so badly that screening test uptake has been critically reduced and many associated pathology laboratories within the NHS have been closed . I retired in 2007 so haven't been invited back to work in the NHS but I was talking to a friend of mine who was a big wheel in UK pathology and only retired last year - I asked him if he'd been recalled and his response was "Wouldn't go if I had. Fell out with PHE long before I left. Wouldn't help that shower if my life depended on it. Would rather pick veg for the poor farmers who can't get pickers. It really isn't an accident that we're doing almost as badly as anyone with Covid19 - that lot couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery."

Some clarity on the issue of flights.

    Who is still flying?

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52319575

Companies such as FedEx Express, DHL and IAG Cargo (a sister company of BA and Iberia) have been ferrying medical supplies into the UK, namely from China.

There is "a huge demand" for component parts for projects to manufacture respirators in the UK, according to Trevor Hoyle from FedEx Express.

He said his company had also moved "a huge amount" of personal protective equipment (PPE) into the UK in recent days.

I doubt you're the only ones with similar views. The board rules prevent me elaborating.

I very much support the measures in place, I think the public as a whole have done really well to rally and support each other and frontline care workers. Boris' strength is tapping into the mind of ordinary people, realising what makes them tick and finding slogans that resonate and appeal, so credit there for his "protect the NHS".

I would like though to know what their plan is to come out of this - I think we all realise there will be a slow loosening of restrictions but it would help lots of people if they knew the targets. Some kind of metrics, like "if the death rate is below x for 14 days, we'll open up the parks and beaches, if it keeps under x rate after that we'll let small businesses open up if they can do social distancing".

I can only assume the government want the ability to change their mind and not held to promises they may not want to keep.
