You would think in this day and age, computers which can do almost anything, would be able to analyse a virus and come up with a vaccine, I thought Artificial intelligence and computers was going to be the next big thing, not yet it seems.

Brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to synthesise the genetic code of a rapidly mutating virus and predict the future stable stasis of DNA or mRNA sequences of nucleotide triplets, synthesised into adaptable proteins.

    Call that job satisfaction?

I mentioned some time ago a out AI finding a wonder drug in February this year with just 10 hours of computer roaming and with only access to a proportion of data. I'm like you Steverico thinking that A1 would be all over this with the data the Chinese supposedly provided...

You sequence the RNA and it gives you a series of equivalent DNA. Three DNA bases code for an amino acid.So you have a sequence of amino acids that make proteins in the virus. However, these amino acids are all folded and cross-linked to give a globular virus. Some amino acid sequences are internal and not "seen" by the body's immune system. Some are common to other proteins and therefore of no use. You can only find epitopes (the part of an antigen molecule to which an antibody attaches itself.) by prolonged testing of short sequences of amino acids called peptides. You synthesise overlapping peptides and try to react them to antibodies to the virus. This gives you vaccine candidates for further testing. Not quick

Of course we were lucky with Human Papilloma Virus (especially type 16 and 18) because the specific proteins that form the virus' outer shell would self assemble when present in a sort of protein soup. They would automatically create an exact replica of the target virus, external structure - so realistic that it stimulated the production of antibodies to give protection against subsequent exposure to the virus (and therefore limit the chances of related malignant tumours from arising).
Unfortunately the coronavirus has a much more complex, and possibly less stable, external structure than HPV and I suspect that this significantly reduces the chances of self assembly - hard work ahead for GSK and Sanofi Pasteur.

Unfortunately riding a motorbike doesn't protect you from Covid-19, even if you've pimped it.

Is it fair to say generally speaking that this virus is more active in colder climates? Looking at the data, of cause you are never sure all the information is true, but it does seem areas of dense population and/or colder climates have more infections that hot climates? Normal flu seems to be more active in the winter, so is Coronavirus similar in this respect?

For those that like graphs, this one breaks down confirmed cases by area. There's a drop down to select other places. Looking at a few locations, the number of cases seems to be falling quite distinctly even allowing for the differing scales used between areas. Some are a day or two behind with the figures.

The following charts show total confirmed cases of Covid-19, broken down by UTLA (Upper Tier Local Authority).
