I am involved in fundraising activities via the OSC for Hull Hospitals and other good causes. You are talking out of your arse. Hospitals and charity go arm in arm, the NHS is a great institution, but it lacks the ability to be anything other than a service. Giving to hospital charities helps provide the extras, beyond the capability of government funding.

I'm not talking out my arse, I'm giving an opinion. Hospitals should be funded properly, not needing charity to 'top up' required services.

It's all very well the Duke of Westminster donating £5 million, when he used a legitimate tax avoidance system for the extreme wealthy to save himself £650 million 5 years ago.

It's not a topic for on here, but he avoided Inheritance Tax, which is a tax that shouldn't even exist.

He pays around £100m a year in taxes on his normal business.

Administrators called in today, a couple of hundred laid off, with the rest furloughed.

Happens all over western/northern Europe. Don't believe the whole 'lazy' Brits thing. Romanians pick asparagus in Germany, Lithuanians, Poles and Romanians pick berries in Scandinavia, grapes in France, tomatoes in Italy. Spain allows North Africans and South Americans special visas to work their harvests.

The issue is that its seasonal work, so it's no good for a British person to do in Britain as you're 6 months out of work every year.. And then what do you do.. It also involves a bit of experience and training, so current crops would be rotting in the ground whilst a new workforce were trained up.

The media love to point the finger at Brits and then social media freaks love to use it to drag up all their prejudices, but it's just the nature of seasonal work - a floating workforce that can either move around to the work or is able to live on six months wages.. ie. Rural Romanians (not Bucharest as it's London prices almost).

The focus on the NHS in my opinion has simply been a calculated (there is that behaviour unit the Govt use) way of ensuring most people get behind the Govt message of stay at home etc. If as a nation or individuals we don't care about ourselves or others, we can rally around the NHS as something to protect which we all use or may need. It's worked / working so...
A longer message including social care, drivers, essentials workers, flour miller's, teachers, shop workers etc, may have been to long a message. A short message worked for Boris before e.g. 'Get B****t done'.
A friend whose a nurse had been forwarding the message please stop giving to us and give to families in need (& she meant it)

I did some voluntary work now and again for a youth homeless charity when I just came out the army and still lived in the UK. I enjoyed it as it gave me a sense of satisfaction but felt I shouldn't have had to have done it as it was necessary work that the government should have been paying someone to do.

There's a no politics rule on here, unless it's necessary for origlambman to make a point, but if a decade of austerity hadn't depleted so much of the UK's public sector, then the country would have been more prepared to deal with it and with significantly fewer deaths.

I don't think he 'felt the need'.... more wanted to show his appreciation in a very small way... it just so happened that it turned into a very big way.

Mountain rescue is a good example.

They literally save peoples lives. Quite often having to use helicopters to drop team members to the location and/or airlift patients off.

They are and always have been volunteers and charities. Nobody gets paid for it, they are on call round the clock like firefighters giving up their own free time and all their equipment is funded with donations.

I’d say they’re pretty essential but no government wants to pay for them.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance grounded currently also. For those in trouble in outlying areas this might have been their hope...

Certainly voluntary work is exactly that. You didn't have to do it if you didn't want to. I coached kids sport for many years with no payment at all and I did it because I really enjoyed it. It doesn't matter what government is in power lots of people will work for nothing. The mantra of many is they wouldn't do voluntary work if someone paid them. Other people like the old fella are just good people who don't think about wether its right or wrong. They just do it and I applaud them for it.
