When the political history of the time is written, I am certain that the internal politics of the governing party as well as the role of civil servants will conclude that too much time and resources were spent on a political ambition at the cost of provision of services and good government.

Wouldn't it make more sense to apply for and hold the voucher at the school?

This rumour got debunked last week, Germany are reporting deaths exactly the same way as us.

They’ll leave the mess for the schools to sort out.

    Schools are shut.

My wife’s sick note from over a month ago has not been processed, so the county council has said she is taking an unpaid leave of absence. The wage department isn’t taking calls and there is no email. The person who deals with the school employees and free school meals is not due back until later this week.
If this is replicated around the country there will be thousands of families having vouchers but no one to produce the food.
At my wife’s school there are only 10 children and 1 cook coming in at the moment. The school has 4 staff members in to deal with the children. The children get sandwiches.

People who normally get free school meals are being given vouchers for supermarkets instead, this has nothing to do with schools actually providing food.

Did your wife get the NHS shielding letter? That is a sick note in itself.

My lady friend got hers this weekend, although her GP was in the ball with it, rang her when they were originally sent out and told her she’s on it, and gave her a backdated sick note.

You'll all be back at school before it gets sorted out.

What inconsistently? It looks like every country has a different way of counting. Never thought something so basic could be so complicated.

Ive tried to find a qualified study, the closest I found to giving a chance was from university of Minnesota’s center for infectious disease research and policy, who claim once every 35 years or 3 per century.

The feeling I get from having flicked through a fair few papers is that something of this scale and magnitude isn’t really what they are thinking about.

It was the guardian I think, I don’t have a favourite outlet but the guardian so har has seemed the easiest to follow - less hysteria and well summarised, no articles hidden behind a paywall etc.

Anyway it was a study by some decorated professor who was skeptical of Germany’s numbers, had a good look into how they are reported and said actually they are reported the same, as in all covid linked deaths in hospitals.

It was last week and I’ve slept several time since then so please don’t expect me to remember details <laugh>

Not what I saw, it definitely wasn’t a famous journalist, I think it was some head of virology from oxford university or something. I can’t find it now but here’s a small bit speaking to the head of Germany’s Robert Koch institute:

“He has insisted there is not, as has sometimes been suspected, an “under-reporting” of deaths from Covid-19 by hospitals. It would in theory be possible that some deaths were not counted as deaths from coronavirus, if the patient had an underlying health condition. But that is seldom likely to be the case, due to the sensibility towards the illness right now. Only if someone with coronavirus was killed by something unrelated to the virus, such as a car crash, would they not be included, medical authorities say.”

A government with massive stockpile of ppe you would think it might know when it would go out of date, therefore flog it back to the health service buy more with a longer date, and so on

Thanks, I didn't pay much attention to the scheme. I had seen schools sending out free meals to entitled children and thought it was the same system.

But with no one to process the sick note the outcome would be the same. It will be sorted out, but its just a frustration.

We're getting through hundreds of millions of face masks, if there's no pandemic, then they wouldn't be used. No country is going to stockpile hundreds of millions of masks that they wouldn't normally need, the only thing you can do to prepare for something like this, is have supply lines set up to get them quicker if something like this does happen.
