South Korea also tracked people’s movements, mobile phone data, card transactions etc, which I couldn’t see going down here what so ever. And had a solid outbreak plan in place and a well rehearsed public who knew what it would take after MERS.

    The circumstances are incomparable.

Some of the crap trending on Facebook annoys me. People are so fickle they’ll believe anything, can’t spot fake news and share everything.

Does the German government track mobile phone data, credit card transactions? Maybe they looked at the strategy of South Korea and adapted it their circumstances.

Another question. What's going on in the USA? the virus turned up there later than Europe, largely in New York then spreading out, now they are already talking about coming out of the lockdown, maybe early May the West coast even sooner.

Trump is going on in the USA. He wants USA to re-open. I imagine he's doing a Bolsonaro and putting the economy before lives lost.

We’re going round in circles. Germany has lots of capacity for diagnostics. They had the infrastructure in place to test tens of thousands of people a day right off the bat.

We didn’t, we sent our samples to Germany. And no other party proposed making these facilities either. So no matter who the government was we would have been in this same situation just like 99% of the rest of the world.

    You’re flogging a dead horse.

Of course I'm flogging a dead horse, whatever I say is irrelevant because we'll still have an incompetent government in charge.

The point you're ignoring is Germany targeted those people who had been in contact with people who had tested positively and made sure they were isolated from the rest of the population. We didn't.

I will take your word for that. I think you are one of the more senior posters on here so fair play to you for (long pause) still having the need to get it up.

Sorry Obi, but chucking incompetence at the government responset this is unfair. That is unless priyou arevy to any prior planning by all departments involved.

If the NHS did not request specific funding for such a worldwide disaster, the government, any government, would not give money on the basis " there you go, just in case".

Tracking? I say civil liberterians would be howling. Yet now, demanding it? Accessing and tracking people's movements by covert means. Yes, the technology is there. Do we use it, and then in due course flick the switch and turn it off? Do we trust it to be discontinued?

There is too much **** throwing going on that helps nobody in this situation.

Sorry for the rant Obi, you are a good guy, but on this we disagree

    Bang on
I can find several things to argue with the government about...whoever the government are, but there’s no easy calls for them at the moment

    They’re still twats though... ;)

    But...
A global pandemic has been number one on the Government’s list of risks for several years.
Therefore they had plans in place to implement if it happened
Question is whether they properly tested those plans?

In 2016 we had a training exercise called Exercise Cygnus. Professor Sally Davies told a health conference the "exercise killed a lot of people". The Cabinet Office in 2017 highlighted a pandemic was the biggest threat we face after nuclear war killing between 20,00 to 750,000 people.

On paper we have been preparing for this for at least 4 years, most probably longer.

It is illegal for the German government to track credit cards, mobile phones etc. If someone is ill in hospital with the virus why not ask them who they've been in contact with? In the current climate I'm sure the question will be answered by the vast majority of people asked. If I was then asked to stay in and isolate for 14 days because I'd been in contact with somebody who has the virus I'd follow the request. If the majority did as was asked the German evidence suggests less lives will be lost.

If Germany's response to the same threat is better than ours then it's legitimate to ask why?

The fact is that Germany struck lucky with the traceability of its first case, the fact that it also was within a single company that’s staff used a company supplied electronic planner. They knew right from the start how the virus was spreading and they had in place a plan based on good information.
We had no idea. no first case that was confirmed. No traceability and no testing regime.
This government has made mistakes. Previous governments made big mistakes and to be honest the political dynamic has changed in the country for a very long time.
I believe that out of all of this madness we will see a more social society.

There may well have been plans in place, tested or not. I imagine any computer modelling would come up with numbers we are seeing now. Horrific numbers we read day to day may way be off what any programme predicted. On the low side. What if the predicted numbers were that high, a decision was made to, sorry the best I can come up with, just wing it?

I'll bang on again about the 600 millions worth of ppe in france. Destroyed as out of date. In the planning stage, the decision is taken to stockpile these items. "How are we fixed for PPE?", all good boss, but there is that warehouse full that goes out of date in a week. Big banner headline, NHS staff issued with out of date protection.

In future what happens? Someone coughs the other side of the world, and declare martial law?

Just read Obi's response. The figures ranged from 20,000 to 750,000.
