Absolutely nothing to do with finding a vaccine for this virus. Many years ago, I read the obituary of the chemist who came up with the formula for dissolvable disprin/aspirin. Hmmm, got to be worth a few quid after that I thought. No, he was a chemist employed by Reckitts, he died at home if i remeber, in a house on Garden Villaga.

So, yes, back on topic, someone will find a vaccine, but I somehow doubt he will receive the billions.

You can have it without any effect of symptoms and you can have it with some symptoms, like a cough, and not others, like a fever.
Bit of a twat isn’t it

I worked with a chap who had a cheque for $1 on his wall. He had his name on a patent which made loads of money, for his employers. Apparently, he had to receive $1 according to US rules, but he framed the cheque rather than cash it.

France have extended the lockdown until May 11th, at which point they hope schools and factories will be able to reopen, but not bars and restaurants.

Yes I believe the rushing to spend big to ensure you have a big budget the following year is a thing of the past .
My misses works for the council and it has changed there.
You often saw increased activity on road maintenance in March time to use up budgets .

The NHS, universities and, I presume, most big companies, do have intellectual property lawyers to ensure that they are paid a share of any profits arising from their research contributions. Where money is paid to such organisations a small percentage may be paid to the individuals who actually performed the work - it varies but is usually about 1 percent.

It's not so much to 'use up' budgets, but works budgeted for or funded by governments, have to start in that financial year or they can't go ahead unless they can be accounted for out of the following years budget, and the previous money can't be carried over. That would leave a knock on effect for future funding and budgets.

It may have changed from over twenty years ago, but a clause in a contract I signed had the company holding all intellectual property rights. May have been a one off discretionary bonus.

Of course it won't be a 'he', it'll be a company with shareholders/directors. They'll be the beneficiaries and we might just find that some of them are also the same philanthropists who speculated in the first place.

This is the daily reported figures
You can see it always drops over the weekend
I suppose less people might die on a weekend, but it’s much more likely that hospital admin processes for registering deaths have stayed the same as they have been and maybe many don’t tend to register deaths on a weekend.
Sadly it looks like every weekend there’s a downturn in numbers and then they go back up again. If it is an administrative thing then that’s likely to be even more pronounced across a BH weekend.

ONS data including care homes comes out this morning

Data from the Office for National Statistics suggests 6,235 people in England and Wales died by 3 April when deaths in the community are included which is 15% higher than previously reported.

Spanish health ministry reports a further 567 people with COVID-19 have died taking the total number of deaths in the country to 18,056.

This part is interesting, and worrying.

"The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 3 April 2020 (Week 14) was 16,387; this represents an increase of 5,246 deaths registered compared with the previous week (Week 13) and 6,082 more than the five-year average."

59% increase on the 5 year average weekly deaths!
