What happened to the ongoing league season when War broke out in 1939?

Teams who sent so many players to war or key industries that they couldn't fulfil fixtures stopped playing.

Any team sending most of their staff to work in hospitals, supermarkets etc. is free to resign from the league, or field guest players as during the war

 

If the league is voided then all the same teams will be in it next season so no-one loses out on that front.

No-one except Liverpool has guaranteed a CL spot yet and if it was voided and we go by last seasons results they get a CL spot still so no-one loses out there.

The season hasn’t been finished and there is no-one who has mathematically won, been relegated or promoted afaik? So no-one loses out on anything.

Liverpool, Leicester and Sheffield Utd, plus the teams pushing for promotion in the championship will probably feel a bit hard done by after this seasons good work, but none of them have actually achieved their goals yet so what they are being denied is a chance to achieve them, they aren’t losing anything that they deserve as it isn’t done yet.

 

When the league resumed, Liverpool won and a Manchester club came second. Everton were midtable.

Or they pay Prize money based on the previous season, or a percentage based on how much of the season has currently been played, or a split pot, or any number of different ways they could come up with to deal with any payments that might need to be made...

 

In other words you cancel and reset. It's really not a difficult concept to grasp tbh

It's also the FAIREST because every club and every competition is treated equally.
