Dozens arrested in Brussels riots during lockdown
Violence follows the death of 19-year-old man who was hit by a police car after evading checks.

The riots followed the death of a 19-year-old on Friday night. The man, identified as Adil, was riding a scooter down Quai de l’Industrie after evading a police check, when he crashed into another police van sent for reinforcement. Following his death, some had issued calls for a rally in protest, despite the current ban on public gatherings amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Ok, put him in custody prior to his trial.
I've been in front of magistrates three times and they are only fit for judging driving offences, just about.

Why? You can't have every shop lifter and drug user in front of a jury, the system would collapse in a day

Incarceration has implications for the rest of your life, unemployable for one. Is it only if you plead guilty that magistrates can sentence? I guess it must be, they don’t try cases?

Summary offences are the least serious criminal offences. They include driving offences, vandalism, criminal damage of low value, low-level violent offences and being drunk and disorderly. This kind of 'lesser' criminality will be dealt with in summary proceedings at a magistrates' court, where the defendant has no right to a jury trial and no formal indictment is necessary. Both verdict and sentence are solely in the hands of district judges or magistrates.

The sentencing powers of magistrates' courts are therefore limited, usually to a maximum of six months' imprisonment. When dealing with two or more separate either-way offences, the maximum total custodial sentence is 12 months.
