There's a lot in there which is on the money. For me, this bit below is what's consistently been the problem...

"Rather than what falls out from the second theme here, which is consistently over-promising and under-delivering with all the stuff about testing, about personal protection, with the numbers themselves where we don't know where we are."

Why not just share the correct figure then?

I agree, mate. We’ll never know the correct figure, though. Covid-19 deaths are also being counted without people being tested. If they showed symptoms it’s being marked down as a Coronavirus death.

They dont have all the info to give it out accurately

Also the deaths in hospital are for those that have died with Cov19 not because of it, so in reality it will be lower.

There are no winners on who you report the deaths, they are still dead :(

I heard via a NHS worker that they aren’t testing people who die before reaching hospital as they do not think it’s good use of a COVID-19 test. Sounds barbaric, but I guess there is some logic behind it.

Sounds like a deliberate tactic to keep the total down to me.

Not sure what that achieves really mate, the numbers are horrendous and they have been pretty upfront by saying that haven’t counted all deaths. I guess it comes down to resources. A test might confirm death either way, but I would rather they were testing front line staff to attempt to keep them safe.

I think there’s a bit of both. Ultimately you’d rather that test went to someone working in a hospital though there is merit in testing the dead for helping track down those who are likely to have been infected too.

But it’s another pretty shocking fact that we can be sat here on April 12th and tests are that scarce. Less than three weeks until our promised 100,000 per day.

I think it suits the narrative that they laid out a couple of weeks back. When they set a level of 20,000 deaths as being the ‘target’. Which if ‘achieved’ will no doubt be heralded as a great ‘success’ by their usual bidders.

Given the numbers we’ve seen on the continent dying in care homes alone, adding roughly 50% to the total will destroy that.

The daily death rate that is announced to the public is people who have died in hospital who have tested positive for the virus.

The ONS is including anyone who showed symptoms.

**** knows why they can't agree on a system, although I could hazard a guess.

    https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200401-coronavirus-why-death-and-mortality-rates-differ

"In the UK, for example, the Department of Health and Social Care releases daily updates on how many people who tested positive for Covid-19 died that day. This includes any patient who tested positive for Covid-19 but who might have died from another condition (for example, terminal cancer). But the UK’s Office for National Statistics counts all deaths as Covid-19 where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, regardless of whether they were tested or if it was merely a suspected case of Covid-19. Adding to the complexity of trying to understand the death rates is that the two are out of sync, since the ONS way of counting can only happen after a death certificate has been issued, so takes longer."

I can’t honestly think of a better way to describe it, sorry. If it was less serious I’d compare to Liverpool fans.

I've stopped taking too much notice of the daily stats if I'm honest, partly because of the above and also because it's so depressing.

It'll take a few years to see the full impact imo.
