I have no idea, but she’s Professor of Vaccinology at the University of Oxford, so I’d assume she knows her onions.

Just put the **** down. No ifs no buts no hugs. terminate the ****

A man has been arrested after he spat at a shop security officer in Hull and claimed he had coronavirus.

Humberside Police in Hull posted about the shocking incident on Facebook although they did not share where in Hull it happened.

When officers searched the man he was also found to be equipped to steal with a bag containing a selection of tools.

The man was arrested and taken to Clough Road police station.

The post said: "Hull patrol have arrested a male for spitting at a shop security officer while saying that he had coronavirus.

"None of our staff or any member of public should ever have to tolerate this sort of behaviour and we will take all action we can against it!

"On being searched he was further arrested for Going Equipped to Steal after a selection of tools were found in his bag."

    From The Hitch

The death numbers that just don't add up

What do the daily death figures, supposedly from Covid-19, really mean?

People who don't know that 1,600 people die normally every day, and who don't study the sombre official figures, or listen carefully to what officials say, may get the wrong impression.

Here are some facts for you.

A week ago, at the daily official briefing, Dr Jenny Harries, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, confirmed my point that many deaths with Covid are not necessarily from Covid. She said: 'These are Covid-associated deaths, they are all sad events, they would not all be a death as a result of Covid.'

What nobody says is how many are as a result of the virus.

Then, if you look at the Office for National Statistics weekly death charts, for week 13 of each year (the week which this year ended on March 27), you find some interesting things.

The total of deaths for that week in 2020 is higher than the five-year average for that time of year, which is 10,130. In fact, it is up to 11,141.

This is 1,011 more deaths than normal per week, 144 more deaths than normal per day, regrettable but not gigantic. Do these figures justify the scale of our reaction?

If you add up the total deaths for the first quarter of the year from respiratory diseases, the figure so far for 2020 (22,877) is less than those for 2013 (25,495), 2015 (28,969), 2017 (25,800), 2018 (29,898) and 2019 (23,336).

Again, is this event as exceptional as we are being told? If not, why the shutdown?

It seems social isolating early, in terms of reported cases appears to be the key to reducing numbers and flattening the curve.
In effect then, Hull and ER started social isolating much earlier than London and the rest of the uk. Presumably, our curve won't the follow that well worn exponential path.

I guess it's hard to protest when you have a pipe down your throat. A quick lift of the gown, tadger male no tadger female. Next.

You can of course believe what you want. As none of us we will ever know the true figures of it all it's a moo point. It's like a cows opinion in that it doesn't really matter. Congrats on the 10lb loss btw.

    Don’t completely agree.
Nothing to be gained by asking why Cheltenham went ahead...but certainly worth getting them to actually agree to an inquiry
Nothing to be gained by asking why there isn’t enough PPE in the country...but certainly worth asking when there will be (and maybe whether we’ll get enough without having to rely on charity from Turkey)

I think it's exactly the time to ask these questions.

There's been a huge failure, somewhere, and we need to find out where. Not because we want a public lynching, but because we now know that this type of thing could happen at any time and we need to protect against it. The mistakes need to be identified, discussed at length and rectified.

It would be nice to think somebody would step forward and admit they made a mistake and how they made it, whoever that may be, but this country has a torrid history of putting pride before practicality and I can't see it happening, save for a huge blame game in government once this is over.

There's absolutely nothing to be gained from blame.

We need someone to come up with a cure or a vaccine. That's about it really.
