I would suspect some of the the vagueness is simply the statistics have never been required to be calculated in this way before in (near) Real Time, they do mention now not hospital deaths when discussing, some still will have to have a Dr certify them in the community, some will go to Coroner (adding to the delay, as DBT noted there is no unified way of recording (& normally there doesn't have to be) stats that are analysed are normally after a year end, these are live & incomplete so trying to make predictions will be unhelpful.
My guess is bigging up the stats would have more impact than downplaying them

Number of deaths every day is just people who died in hospital and were tested. The real figure will be at least 25% higher. It's a bit like saying I've put on about 7lbs during lockdown. We all know it's way more...

True story...I was given safety goggles at work that fell off when I moved. When I raised this I was told ' well just move about less'. I tried a laggy band and stapled it to the arms but this cut circulation off to my forehead and nose. I end up wearing my cycling glasses.

For many, fresh air and freedom to move is essential to health and well being. I'd rather hear that the police are kindly reminding that groups remain apart and how's about them handing out masks, rather than fines. The lockdown is unsustainable. How's about telling all obese, diabetics and vulnerable to isolate and recommend everyone else social distance by a few metres and wear a mask.

Interesting thread comparing UK to Ireland. Main point is the massive difference caused by the difference in starting social distancing, but there’s also mention that Ireland are including deaths in care homes in the published info, and there’s roughly the same amount dying of Covid19 in care homes as in hospitals (little more actually I think from memory)

Tim Brooke-Taylor has died at the age of 79 after contracting coronavirus. He was a very funny bloke.

    Th

She makes fair points and it's probable that the 10 or so days of social distancing made a difference, as far as I know, but to answer her first question, the reason why the media are not hounding the government for answers is that in the middle of the crisis, it serves no purpose and just disrupts time and repairs. The inquiry is generally held after the event is over.

i don't believe it's more, i don't believe it's way more, and i absolutely don't believe it's anything like 25% more. some people in hospital may not have been tested but just have similar symptoms. some countries are making assumptions about cause of death because they see little point in testing dead people. in the usa, the number of pneumonia deaths for the week ending march 28th was the lowest for any week in the last five years by around 15% and the number of coronavirus deaths that week didn't account for it.

and i'm 10 pounds down since the beginning of march.
