In a nutshell. The remainers on here made a big deal that British people won’t pick fruits from fields. We argued we’ve done it before and would do it again. They said we haven’t got it in us unlike our EU friends.

So the obvious solution is to continue using EU schemes to important workers, often paid below British minimum wage, to pick fruit in order to ensure we don't seem xenophobic.

How many are out there working ?
Showing an interest will not translate into people doing these jobs ?
Of course it will. You think everybody is going to apply, get interviewed and then just not bother taking the jobs while their families struggle for food?

Not true,
I argued there was 1,000s of vacancies and almost no long term unemployed.

Maybe that has changed?

It’s things like this that we should focus on changing rather than some dream about everything shutting down for a couple of months ever year!

Sorry, had a John Lennon moment there. Still, he was my favourite scouser, so why not?

Yes. I also have always realised that it’s a job Brits will turn to if we need work.

Naturally........Still don't get what it has to do with the EU though..... People need to pay bills if job is lost on mass any job is going to be a job until things pick up again and then they will go back to better paid jobs they lost originally.... Leaving few wanting hard labour in a farmers field

I did fruit picking in my younger days, I used to enjoy it. I had a mate that used to take a couple of weeks holiday from work in the summer, just to go and do fruit picking, the money he earned went towards paying for his holidays in September. Also my elder relatives used to do the hops until it turned mechanical.

So what changed from my persepctive, firstly a lot of the orchards were handed over to building housing. Secondly we weren't paid alot, which wasn't a problem, but the farmers wanted even cheaper labour, we couldn't compete, because the migrants had cheaper living costs back home. So much so, I don't know anyone anymore that does fruit picking, yet, I used to know whole families that did it.

As for strawberries, I will admit I never done them, and very much doubt I could at my age now, as it is a job for a younger person.

Hello, hello, is that Mr Johnson, can you just change the rules especially for aberdude, he want's to go up the mountain?

Yeah, yeah, I know Boris, but he's Welsh!

Hello...yes, this is Boris. Tell theTaff he’s welcome to climb the mountain, but stay 6 feet away from any sheep.

Toodle pip...

Is the assumption here that British people simply cannot work hard, or that people born outside of Britain are significantly better at repetitive low skilled work?

So, when British people don't apply for these jobs, they're lazy, when they do apply for them it doesn't matter because they won't be as good anyway.
Britain has "imported" foreign labour for decades to do what are considered the menial jobs. There aren't as many foreign fruit pickers around right now but there are a lot of people who have lost their jobs.

I think a very small amount of people will do it !
Showing an interest will not result in lots of people doing it whether as you say you voted in or out !

That's simply not true. You've put a very biased spin on that.

Just a question for some of you lazy bastards sat at home doing **** all whilst I'm keeping the country going :emoticon-0165-muscl.
Does anybody see any harm in going for a bike ride in the countryside where there is no body about ???

Provided it's not close to where Chaos is digging? ... given the likelihood of there being more than one body about round there <ok>

I picked cherries, peaches and grapes in France as a young man. No French people did it, just as no English people do it here; it’s the sort of job you do when you can’t get anything else, although I enjoyed it and it enabled me to experience life in another country for a while. Plus, in the 80s, wine and ***s were dirts cheap in France.

Apple and pear picking is a piece of piss, i can't see it's changed much from my day, most trees now are dwarf stock, you fill a cloth bag with your pickings, which you then empty into a bin, you get paid by the bin load. Once one bin is full, a farm hand will tractor them away and leave another bin, I can't think the job would have changed that much. Used to be weekend work, which was excellent if you needed some extra income.

I want to tell you that that kind of dreaming is pointless because it’ll literally never happen and that you should focus your energy on practical changes and realistic ideas to improve the environment... but you threw John Lennon in the mix and I haven’t got the heart to tread on your dreams now.

Not sure that new spade is going to arrive though must have worn the other one out .

Apparently an openreach Engineer was stabbed in London yesterday over this 5G Corona Virus Fake News :(

Turns out that the poor bugger was stabbed , but it was a Burglary ( Probably trying to nick his laptop ) .

Still , a sad sign of the times that I believed it WAS because of the 5G thing .
