Another nerve struck? Sorry to steal your thunder, oh Great Brain of Our Time.

Time for you to stimulate your intellect and go out and play on your tyre?

My daughter's business has been designing, manufacturing and supplying single use medical equipment to the NHS for nearly 20 years. It is highly technical with constant training and education. There is no place for government intervention, they have tried and failed in the past.

Your daughter could exactly the same job if she was employed by a government department. If you say she would not be able to do that, then you need to ask why the government department is not up to the job.

You don't go from scratch to be the market leader without a huge endorsement from the NHS. The company, including the scores of staff, are doing a fantastic job for the NHS. The present system works extremely well, from this unusual experience all governments will store far greater amounts of stock in future.

You have sidestepped the question. There are various security functions that work perfectly well within the control of governments departments. There is no reason at all why your daughter should not be a well paid civil servant.

You know nothing about business or the NHS. Your statement is foolish.

About 30 years ago I did some construction work for a government research station that was involved in pig breeding. Every visit started off by having to take a shower just off the reception area, then putting on a full protection suit, including mask and headgear. This was not for my protection, but for the well being of the pigs. It strikes me that there was more consideration for those pigs than the government has shown for the NHS staff.

Presumably because money was to be made from the pigs. The NHS doesn’t show a ‘profit’ so why invest in it?
It’s this sort of thunking that gets us in the state we’re in.

Something simple but selfless. Wonderful, wasn’t it?
Someone simple and selfish. Never described as wonderful (unless with heavy irony).

Your posts often make little sense but this one is classic.

Without my daughter's business the UK would be sourcing stock from multinational companies whose interests lie elsewhere. Their stock would cost more.
Undoubtedly these companies would also avoid paying tax in the UK if they can. Are you suggesting the NHS should pay more for stock, scores of employees lose their jobs just to make one person a civil servant?

    Are you on something?

The UK government is sourcing stock from wherever it can get it because of lack of planning and not having any control over what is being made on the other side of the world. These are exceptional circumstances, but the warnings were there loud and clear in January, and little was done. When you see other countries take heed, get the orders in and are receiving supplies when the UK are still trying to place orders, you know how dysfunctional the system is. It is no wonder that the press has universally condemned the government today. And yes, if a government might pay more for something made in the UK, but saves lives, I would say it was worth it. I am not one of those that weighs lives against cost I am afraid.

Most countries were short of stock at the beginning of the pandemic. France only had 100 million masks in stock and no FFP2 respirators. It is still sourcing stock from China. Yesterday France had stock whipped from under its nose by a much larger bid from American buyers whilst still on the runway in China.
