Amazing how this myth keeps getting recycled.

I've told this story before, but it clearly illustrates the truth of the matter.

In the late 1980s, a workmate left Glasgow to work in Manchester. On his first trip home he met up with us & startled us by declaring "The people in the north of england hate the english more than we do!"

What this illustrated was that ALL northerners, right up to John O'Groats, were united in hating the establishment (& probably still hate it). Scots do not hate individual english punters, and actually have a great affinity for those in the north. The classic example of establishment bias to the south east was the tory use of interest rates to manage the economy, particularly the property sector. If house prices rose too quickly in London, they raised the interest rate to calm the market, but it all but killed the market in the north, particularly Scotland and rural areas. The reverse applied when the south east property market needed a boost. They were well aware of this, but persisted, knowing where the bulk of their votes lay. Lawson, under Thatcher, was the main culprit. He is one of those individual english punters who is hated, but not just in Scotland. He's easily surpassed by Thatcher, I might add.

I took this as a story until I moved to Wetherby in 1990. I worked in Yorkie bank & was absolutely stunned by the hatred for Thatcher & her creed that I discovered. Made the Scots look like moderates, I kid you not. I had forgotten how important mining was in the area. I witnessed countless 'posh' people who I'd previously have guessed were rampant tories, go apoplectic at the mention of Thatchers name. Normally I wind up people for their OTT views, but even I knew not to tread there. Never seen anything like it.

I hope this clears this up in your mind. If not, it's a good reason to hate you!

Now before you mention it, you will find that there are people in Scotland who hate everything about the english, including individual they come across. They are generally uneducated morons who are a disgrace to society. I should mention at this point that I was stunned when I went down to work for IBM in Warwick. I thought the english hating the Welsh was a joke. It wasn't for a lot of people. And these weren't thick morons - they were well educated people. I never did get a reason out of them for this. They seemed to expect that everyone should feel the same. Bit of an eye-opener.

WJ you do actually hate the English and England though mate. I've only picked up on this recently but you never capitalise English or England but do so for Scotland and even Wales

Nar the English don't hate the Welsh, look at the French Euro's , they drank and stuck together against the Russians, English and the Jocks or Irish fans find it harder to drink together without it kicking off, although I have seen it ( Talking about international wise, individually it's fine)

Personally I've always got on with the Scots more than the Welsh, even when I was doing basic training, I always got on with the Northern English than the Southerners.
