I'm a socialist at heart but you've got me thinking... what was the alternative action they could've taken which you would've considered as not being socialist?
There isn't.
The only choice is to share the states money with the people. It's happening all over the world.

I used to like that. No ****ing way you’d get away with it now.

I played it on YouTube for the kids a while back. They quite liked it.

Some of it was not very funny just because it wasn't funny no other reason, but was funny back then.

My Twitter delusion list is full of people still trying to claim it's a normal flu season or that this is no worse than flu.

They really are on another level
Too arrogant and ignorant to admit they were wrong. They’ll end up comparing Covid-19 deaths to flu deaths and ignore the fact that the country had to grind to a virtual halt while the Bank of England funded it to keep the number of deaths down.

Yeh fair point. The only problem is that means it's not something done because it was the right choice but because it was the only choice. It doesn't really prove socialism works. That's not to say socialism doesn't work, I wholeheartedly believe in it, but the Tories won't be doing it with any conviction.

They had very little choice.
The options were to allow employers to lay off staff, which would've bankrupt the companies and overloaded the benefits system. Or to make payments via HMRC to cover the wages employers could no longer afford.

I would've preferred a direct payment to tax payers including those registered as self employed but there was an overhead in that millions of people would need to register on the HMRC self serve system to provide bank details.

There needs to be a continuous cross party agreement put in place to react quicker when these sort of situations occur !
There will be another pandemic in the future and wait and see with a Cobra meeting just isnt good enough !

IMO pure capitalism is too ruthless and allows too much inequality whilst pure socialism or communism leads to stagnation.

A capitalist driven system curtailed by strong social values is the only system we have which can try to make the best of each way of thinking but finding the right balance is the difficult bit!

I think after this there needs to be contingency plans put in place to deal with a similar situation in the future. The problem is the hugely varying nature the effects of a virus could have and at what point the contingency plans kick in. There’s been a few false dawns with other viruses that never lived up to the initial fear and at the other end of the spectrum this could have been much worse if the virus was more aggressive in its spread or fatality rate.

No one is doubting the hard work and commitment of the NHS staff. They’re going to have the most horrendous few weeks, bless every one of them. The problem is they’ve been shat on for years. No point trying to sugar coat a turd.

I'd rather finance a false dawn than chase a runaway train mate !
In fact a global response system needs to be in place .
Theres no chance at the minute with Americas blame game leader but the economic impact should wake up the world !

Why can't socialism achieve this on its own? I wouldn't say "capitalist driven" but it can certainly allow free enterprise.

Progressive socialism doesn't need to be perceived as some throwback to the 70's.

The German system works perfectly well .
Companies /Unions working in Tandem.
The adversarial nature of this island nation prohibits such compromise or should I say did i
