Just received an e-mail from my internet company telling me how the current restrictions will work. Rather liked the final paragraph, that although it does not make much difference to me, does show how thoughtful some can be. "Finally, to support you during this period, nevertheless allowing you to have a good time with family and to distract your children, Orange will offer free-to-air broadcasting to all Orange TV customers via their decoder, from March 17 to 31 2020, 4 OCS channels and 5 youth channels: Boomerang, Tiji for the little ones and Boing, Toonami and Canal J for the bigger ones (excluding services on request)." Can we expect BT and Sky to provide free services in the near future if the schools do close?
I have been reading that some people in England have gone online to order groceries for elderly relations, only to find that the first delivery slot available is three weeks away. There are ways round such things, but it needs some local organisation. During the late 1980's at the height of the 'Cold War', councils up and down the country were given instructions on what measures had to be taken in the event of attack. One of those things was arranging food supplies. Organize one delivery to take account of all the orders from one area or village. It makes little sense for the supermarkets to make deliveries every day to different individuals in the same area. The supermarkets will be happy to cooperate as it saves them money. Back in the 1980's there was not the same delivery options as exist today, so a large order would have been delivered to one place, and then shared out fairly depending on need. Today individual orders could still be made up, but items in short supply could be excluded, and a fair distribution of such things made.
Euro 2020 has been postponed to 2021 as a result of the coronavirus crisis, the Norwegian Football Association has announced. The tournament was due to have been held this year from 12 June to 12 July across 12 countries, including England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. The Norwegian FA tweeted: “Uefa has decided that the Euros should be postponed until 2021. It will be played from 11 June to 11 July next year.”
I live in a cul de sac, two doors down from the playground of our village school. Every day at around 2:50pm, parents start to gather on the street outside my house to wait for their children to be let out - and after they are let out, many play in the playground whilst their parents continue to chat. It's a nice friendly atmosphere and normally the street isn't clear until 3:20pm. Today, the bell sounded at 3:00pm and the street was clear four minutes later. I think the message is getting through.
Blimey maybe he is being honest but I am not sure I'd be calling the potential of 20k deaths a "success"!
You can be more than a daft old sod, sh, but I wish you and your family all the best. Can you keep in touch with your mother in law by phone? I hear many nursing homes are not allowing visitors, which is understandable. Has your wife a necessary amount of medication to last more than the length of time of whatever ‘quarantine’ is to be deemed necessary?
Listening to the Chancellor and the Prime Minister just now, they really are on a different planet to what we are seeing out here. Macron addressed the country and his main points were to protect the individuals by a series of measures to ensure that they could be certain that they could continue to live. Maybe they wouldn't have as much as they were used to, but enough to live, and things such as no fuel or water bills being sent out would help over the coming weeks and months. Compare that with what the UK is offering and you maybe lucky if your bank will bail you out for three months, but that is going to cost you at the end of the day. No increases in the derisory sick pay, and nothing for those outside the scope of it. When it came to companies there was some help, but loans with interest payments would make one ask just how long will I need it, and will it need repayment before my company was able to attract customers back. Wracking up more debt is not attractive to some companies. Today I have received text messages from the government, the local council has delivered the certificates that I need to travel for essential services, and the people do seem to be taking notice of what needs to happen. 36M tuned in to watch Macron and he has clearly got the message across. I can only believe that the UK government has been woefully unprepared, unless of course they are a bunch of incompetents.
After last nights announcement basically everything shut down today here and I guess it's the same for us all. I hope everyone gets through this and not just the virus but the impact of basically being at home. Mme is feeling a bit weird about the shutdown but I think it's an opportunity to get on with some long delayed jobs and our current de-cluttering project. The best thing is our gym closed today until further notice Now where did I put my Star Trek box set.... Don't panic, we're British!
Or they only really wish to put themselves first. I've been told, but have no idea whether this is true or not, that the reason they haven't followed the lead of other countries and told non-essential shops to shut is that those shops could claim for any loss of trade on their insurance. In turn, the insurance companies could then make a claim against the government. Apparently £100million spent on a pointless 'Get brexit Done' campaign is ok - but helping people who need help, forget it.
UEFA want all leagues completed by June 30th. So basically we have to re start in mid May? https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www....stic-club-competitions-completed-June-30.html
The UK is behind those European countries with far more deaths at the moment. I expect the UK government to continue announcing further measures to help businesses and individuals in the near future as and when needed.
Exactly what I’ve heard. Spanish government allowing £250bn for small businesses, UK, £12bn. All this advice saying “should” rather than “must” is cheaper for their mates in the insurance industry - screw the ordinary, working, small business-person.
I don't like comparing the EU and the UK, but why is it possible for the French government to introduce financial certainty into people's lives, but in the UK they are still trying to work out what to do? We have certainty about what we should do with travel etc., we know that businesses will not be allowed to open, but in the UK it is now left to individual companies to make a decision that should be coming from government. A bar owner was on TV today asking should he open as he needed to pay the staff, but he knew that it wasn't responsible to do so. He needs cash now, or the government needs to say they will pay his staff. To offer a business rate reduction is of little help at this moment.
I'd say good luck to them trying to get that enforced - I can almost hear the response from governments across Europe now, not to mention medicos and the general population. For me, it comes back to the only really viable option - for every League to be declared over and current table positions deemed final. They can't, and have no right to, endanger peoples lives.
I was listening to Jamie O’Hara and he was saying that players can’t suddenly pick up where they left off after a sizeable break, they would need some sort of ‘pre-season’ to get up to the quality people expect.
The UK is acting sooner in the natural cycle of this virus than the French. France is a week or so ahead, by next week I expect further measures to be announced. You conveniently forgot the cash grants on top of cancelling business rates and providing interest free loans. Mortgage firms are offering payment holidays. The Chancellor has said he will do "whatever it takes". As the UK's level of borrowing is far lower than countries such as Italy, Spain France it has a greater capacity to run up further debt without creating serious problems later.
