Imagine the riots in the local Spoons if the English government took the same line as Ireland.

In a statement, the government said: “Following discussions today with the Licenced Vintners Association (LVA) and the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI), the Government is now calling on all public houses and bars (including hotel bars) to close from this evening (Sunday 15th March) until at least 29 March.

I have been receiving emails during the day to tell me that bars, restaurants and shops that I use quite often are now closed. It creates a strange feeling, which makes little sense as I really can live without using them. Ferry companies and airlines telling me that I cannot travel, or might have problems doing so, yet I have no intention of going anywhere. To have restrictions put on things that you never normally give two thoughts to does make you wonder if you need all these, but to be told you have to live without them creates a different mindset altogether.

In some ways we need to get some perspective on this. In 2017 there were 1.6 million deaths worldwide from Tuberculosis and in 2018 there were 405,000 deaths from Malaria Worldwide. Nearly a billion people live in areas where Yellow Fever outbreaks are a regular occurence. But these are all far away from where we are - all in countries outside of our Western bubble. As a friend from Ghana reminded me the other day, many Africans live with these threats for their whole lives - but only when a virus reaches Washington, London or Berlin, only then do we call it a World event.

Iceland Foods at Kennedy Centre, West Belfast will be opening their store between 8-9am for the elderly starting this Tuesday. The wider public are asked to respect this hour as it has been allocated for elderly people only. Would be great to see other stores now do the same

In fairness to Iceland, they have always led the way (No GM food, distinct labelling of allergens, palm oil etc etc)
Not easy, given they aren’t the largest force. But they are definitely the most moral.

Take note Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Morrisons, and the German Bros!

Looks like the misery is about to start. I don't know how many of those poor souls will cope - eight weeks unpaid leave with a five week wait for a less-than-generous Universal Credit, and what happens beyond the three month mark? The government really have to step in

If anyone thinks queues at European grocery stores are long, the queues at gun stores in Los Angeles are longer ! The World is staying indoors meanwhile Americans are out to buy guns to shoot the virus <doh>

Australia's leading supermarket chain, Woolworths, announced similar last week. Their chosen hour for the 'oldies and disabled' was 7:00am - 8:00am. Sounds a tad early, but most folk I know over there enjoy getting up around 6:00am - best part of the day in hotter climates, the cool air, magpies warbling their dawn chorus, the strong eucalyptus scent caused by dew on the leaves of Gum trees. Making me homesick...

If people are being told to stay at home for 12 weeks cannot see football with crowds getting going soon.

I have the symptoms so my family have to isolate themselves for 14 days. I am more concerned with my wife as she has underlining acute asthma condition which she normally keeps well under control. We were planning to bring my 95 year old mother in law from her nursing home to live with us until it all blows over. This is not now possible and my wife is in a dilemma whether to chance seeing her mother or not.
    Strange times.

Not everyone who has symptoms has this SH. The chances are still around 500 to one that it's a bout of flu or a bad cold - but still you don't want to give it to nearest and dearest. Hope everything is ok. because at times like this political differences don't mean a thing - everything will be ok !

Despite similar advice being handed out in France about avoiding gatherings a couple of weeks ago, yesterday we had beautiful weather, and the parks in Paris were full of people enjoying the Spring sunshine. It really needed the parks, like the bars, shops, theatres and clubs etc to have been closed by law, rather than rely on people using common sense. Will people avoid going down to the local for a swift pint?
Pub landlords are saying that if the government put a ban on them opening then they could have claimed on the interruption to business clause in their insurance, but as it stands now they are just left in limbo.
