This decision has not been taken lightly'
Statement from the EFL: "The FA, Premier League, EFL and Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England until 3 April at the earliest.

"This action, which will be kept under constant review, has been taken due to the increasing numbers of Clubs taking steps to isolate their players and staff because of the COVID-19 virus.

"The postponements include all matches in the Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all Academy and youth team fixtures.

"In addition, clubs are being advised to suspend indefinitely all non-essential activities which include, but are not limited to, player appearances, training ground visits and fan meetings.

"Whilst the EFL Board has continued to take the advice and guidance offered by the Government and its health advisors, emerging developments mean now is the time to implement football’s contingency plans in response to the crisis.

"A further update on these plans will be given post an EFL Board Meeting next week.

"This decision has not been taken lightly, but the EFL must prioritise the health and well-being of players, staff and supporters while also acknowledging the Government’s national efforts in tackling this outbreak."

that will really stir up the race to the prem!!!! best to do it now as we were on a national break for a while anyway so looks like it will be a re arranged fixture list of 9 games in a 6 week period?

I would suspect the games on 2nd MAY may be moved to 9th or another full list fixture all teams playing same day same time on 9th and then mid week on 22nd and 29th

This has hit my sister and her husband hard. They are contracted to televise Premiership games. No games, no pay - and no they’re not loaded.

Another knock on effect of this horrible situation. So many different industries will be pushed to breaking point. From transport to hospitality, tourism and people just trying to go about their daily lives.
Governments around the world ought to impose severe and lasting sanctions on China for causing yet another worldwide health issue until they sort out the way they live. Stripping and eating everything from the land, air and sea.

AN16 - it's their culture and has been for centuries. That doesn't make it right from a westerner's point of view, but whilst sanctions would impact upon the ruling elite, I'm afraid they would do very little toward in getting the 1.3bn rural Chinese to change their lifestyle.

Whilst the source was undoubtedly China, the main condemnation in Europe should be directed at Italy. They are fundamentally responsible for the spread of the virus throughout Europe and the western world as a whole. Their disgusting laissez-faire attitude to the intial cases in their country has condemned the rest of us to a far greater risk.

If anyone should be sanctioned it's them, but I suspect the rest of the EU "club" will be afraid to upset their present apple cart.

What the **** why is the UK allowing people to come in and spread this ****.
Should have shut the doors for a month.
i blame the government for not dealing with it correctly.
it is almost as if they want people to catch the ****.

They are acting from the information from medical scientific experts...IMO the very right thing to do.....eventually most of us will get it, but they are delaying the peak to deal with it when required....Sensible without panic..
Not sure it's right to blame Italy either....hindsight is a wonderful thing, but 4 weeks ago, I'm not sure anyone knew how it was going to develop or how to deal with it.

I am not sure most of us is the right term... a lot get the flu? I don't do Flu jabs and in the past 10 years cant recall having it ….. as for panic... I think that is what Boris was laying the foundation for, BUILDING UP the worst case scenario … a sudden realization of "s***" what am I GOING TO DO!
ITALY HAS A POPULATION OF WHAT? 60M how many cases? areas of those succumbing to it have a high level of older people.. USA total is from mostly 1 place … 64 million here in UK most would be 32m AND 1? seems children are not much affected? I thought fit active people would be less likely? but hey ho footballers!!!!!!! … Will keep on eating my greens ...

Sorry onefor, but Italy had the opportunity to contain the cluster infections less than three weeks ago. They failed to act in the full knowledge of the Chinese and South Korean models to which they had access.

The delay in putting in place effective measures those first 10 days or so has let the genie out of the bottle in Europe as a whole. I think I'm right in saying that around 50% of those tested as positive in the UK had the contracted the virus directly or indirectly from an Italian source.

I visited Italy scores of times during my business life and as many times again for leisure. They are a lovely nation of people when things are going OK, but completely hapless when it comes to organisation, decision making and action.

Did anyone see the satellite shot of China showing the non-existent toxic cloud over the country since they shut down most, if not all, manufacturing? How on earth they can say they are not polluters beggars belief and how nice it would be if the international community gave them a complete boycott of their products until such time as they fix the problem. Will the world learn from this attack on our future prosperity or will we continue down the same path? Remember the war to end all wars that didn't change a thing?

World leaders, other than the Chump, need to step up and be counted in the ever growing battle against apathy and doing the right thing for the world.

You really are a bellend blaming all these pesky foreigners.
Most of the cases in this country are Brits coming back from holiday you twat.

Anyway you can kiss this season good bye as it is looking like mass gatherings are going to be banned. And seeing as they are mentioning Wimbledon, Glastonbury and Ascot means it’s going on into the summer.

just imagine the chaos if Jeremy was in charge … would likely be sending hand wash and bog rolls to some of his world wide friends...I notice [ BBC chart] Iran is / was neck and neck over the past week with the numbers infected with Italy ….. and Spain suddenly took a huge leap … Greenland and Madagascar looking like safe holiday destinations....

I believe they did act according to the information available at the time....Milan & close surrounding areas were more or less closed off and then the rest followed...I've also spent many times in Italy and know that they are 2nd in the world for best hospitals, so are not stupid when it comes to health & diet..
Like I said, hindsight is wonderful after the event.....we are doing in this country different to them as we have learned that there plan to contain it didn't work, although they now have encouraging signs in the north..

Not talking about their health service which is superb and bears favourable comparison with anywhere in the world - I've experienced it. It wasn't them that made the fundamental decisions that led to the current position.

Implementing strategic measures to control the spread was the function of the government and regional governors who was slow to react and inefficient in the enforcement. The medics and staff just had to deal with the fall out as it exploded - it wasn't their fault that it actually did.
