163 out of all the economists in the country. The UK economy has held up well compared to the rest of the world, particularly Euro countries which are in a poor state. And this, despite Brexit which no doubt all those 163 said would be a disaster. Austerity was coming to an end. It's easy to see the economy needed rebalancing to give the North priorities. The Tories promised to rebalance in their manifesto. The electorate chose to trust them with the economy over Corbyn and his mates. That's it.

The broad thrust of the budget is correct in my opinion, I'm not going to criticise it just because it's from a Tory government. I just find it galling to see it being applauded by people who would have slaughtered a Labour chancellor for doing the same. See a pattern there?
I think the majority of voters considered parts of Labour's spending to be frivolous, free broadband, WASPI Women, and other spending that wasn't necessary. The Tories promised spending on the neglected regions. Had Labour gone ahead with massive spending and then run into a Covid crisis what would their fallback position be? It shows what I and others on here have said that a credible and more moderate Labour would have had every chance when the Tories were in disarray, a great opportunity was squandered...
I cant believe the idiots that are moaning at the government for not having 3 million spare beds or complaining about the budget. Agree with Col, this is the time to unite and not a time to score political points.

Not complaining about the Budget at all. Quite the contrary. Just find it hypocritical of those who bought into the spin about Labour’s spending plans to be supportive of this. We’ve been immensely lucky so far that known infection rates and numbers needing urgent care are relatively low. Capacity in the NHS has been an issue for a long time in normal circumstances. If 10% of those infected need urgent care and infection rates become more serious there’s an obvious ticking time bomb. Bet you lot were all united and happy clappy when Labour governments needed you to be.
Funnily no one is mentioning all the problems in other countries health services? I hear in Italy that they are choosing who lives and dies with the critical. Just another knock at the tories and NHS. As it happens we may not have 3 million spare beds but 2 NHS personell were on the news yesterday saying that our critical care is one of the best around and knocks socks off many of the so called great health services of the World. The truth is you cannot prepare for something like this and just have to deal with it when it happens.... That's not me thats the WHO experts in Paris. Our government are taking advice from the people who understand this crisis. Rather than keep knocking them people should listen and stop trying to make political points.

It’s not point scoring. It’s stating what seems like an obvious issue. By quantifiable metrics, Italy were in a better place in terms of capacity for this than we are. I wouldn’t expect any nation to be able to fully cope with what they’ve gone through which sounds dreadful but under the same circumstances we’re all different levels of ****ed. If our infection rate gets to the same level as theirs and I don’t honestly see why it wouldn’t, logically we aren’t equipped to cope with it even to the level they have. Not everything is quantifiable though and we might be relatively ok. Logically I don’t see why we should be though. Attitudes here are comparable to what they were there not long ago.
Great post, strange as well that all of us Tory haters on here have all made positive comments about the budget as well.
Much of the slagging has come from other Tories - Jeremy Hunt, Rory Stewart - and good old Nigel Farage.
