There can be a cultural shift imo and there was during those Tory years. I accept though that the "Pull the ladder up, I'm alright Jack" attitude was there before but it was looked down upon in previous generations rather than something that was worn as a badge of honour in the 80's onwards.

We are all responsible for our own selfishness, including me, nor do I blame a government for that. I think we all need to take a hard look at ourselves, instead of trying to attach reasons to pass the blame.

 

He was a well educated man.... He would have known what he was doing.... He was a maniac that didn't give a fk for the soldiers who stupidly didn't tell him to go fk himself unless he shows them how its done first

 

There most definitely was, and it was two fold. Firstly the ‘yuppie’ tread on their heads if it earns you a quid or two attitude.

Then there was the start of the collapse of the local community. People generally used to stay close to their families, areas had genuine communities, with often generations of the same families all relatively close geographically. Then came Thatchers decimation of our manufacturing base and many had to get on Norman Tebbits bike. The populations of Cities like mine were massively reduced and the close communities largely died. I watched it happen with my own eyes, and then became part of it. Sad times.

 

Agree but the culture of 'community' or 'selfishness' is passed down from one generation to the next generation. It's much harder to say it's an individual responsibility when it's what wider society says is the norm to the next generation. You target the youth and you shift opinion. That's what we saw with the yuppy culture of the 80's and that's what we're seeing now with the climate change generation of today.

 

He attended some decent educational establishments, but that doesn’t mean he was well educated......

He was in the Bullingdon club funnily enough.......

I've lived in my house now for 20 years .
When I moved in most of the neighbours where 60 and above .
They all talked to you or said hello .
Most of them have now died and younger people have moved in .
They arent bad people but they dont have time to say hello or talk !
Its defo a different society nowadays .

Yeh but what drives that though? Like you say they're not bad people. It's the fact that everyone is work-focused. We have to be to aspire to achieve the things we in this country feel is a must... or even just the simple things your parents achieved like buying your own home. In that respect I don't blame people for the way they are.

It is worse in some places more than others. London being one great big example.

Is this the culture we see on the continent? I'm not so sure it is. Somewhere along the line we as a nation decided on a different set of priorities.
