I'm supposed to be running Manchester Marathon on 5th April. I'm in training and have been since before Christmas. I have hotel booked. I got an email saying that the event is still going ahead as it is outside and this virus doesn't survive long outside so it will be safe.

I think what they have forgotten is that they are running a park and ride scheme and also use the tram system. There are 35,000 runners and many more thousand spectators. All having to use public transport to get to the event. It's not very clever is it!

Anyhow, the reason I run is to combat a health condition which affects my lungs (obviously not too severely). Running keeps my lungs in decent condition. Anyway, as my usual luck would have it, I picked up a bit of a chest infection this last week or so. I'm not one for panicking but I am pulling out of the event. It's not worth the risk especially with elderly parents and my wife and 7 year old son coming to watch me run.

I think its madness for these events to go ahead if the numbers keep rising as they did in Italy. All other European countries that have coronavirus are following the same curve as Italy was 2 weeks ago. I'm no biologist but it doesn't take the biggest IQ to see the trends repeating in all countries that have had it. I don't know why our government think we are special!

Think we will announce the closing of schools tomorrow, as we try to react a bit quicker than Italy, death rate over there is over 7% <yikes> and they are looking at not bothering to treat the elderly. <yikes>.
Wouldn't be surprised if going football goes tomorrow as well.

So we follow the Italian pattern and shops begin to close in a few weeks.... can see the panic buying escalating now, especially if we start to announce the start of the delay phase later today.

There's an irony in charity marathons going ahead, given most fund raising is to support vulnerable people. Better to postpone, rather than say cancel these.

I find it unbelievable that a health minister felt unwell and didn't self isolate for 2 or 3 days before being diagnosed and she has an elderly mother staying with her. There is a selfishness to many people not supporting action. It's as if the elderly and vulnerable are expendable. I believe Italy are looking to support the younger patients as their resources are stretched. I get the feeling our own government have done the sums and are allowing for 'collateral damage' numbers as an allowable death and infection rate versus protecting the economy. Trump has only acted now, as his business head sees the impact on the stock markets versus his people.

Reports from China are confirming that lock downs were implemented in some areas too late but have had a positive impact when implemented fast. This to the extent that the lock-down areas are now reopening businesses and schools and kick starting the economy again - a short sharp shock, allowing economic recovery to take place quickly. This versus Wuhan where things were allowed to continue too long. Far far bigger infection numbers and deaths than other chinese regions and still locked down including the longer term impact on their local economy.
