In terms of successful covers, taking a B-track from a lesser known band and turning it into an anthem known generations later has got to be mentioned too. Not one of my favourites but it is a classic and Paul McCartney referred to it as "the killer song of all time": How many knew it was even a cover?
Placebo - "Running up that hill" All a matter of opinion, to me though, miles better than Kate Bush's version
If it's good enough for Sir James (my musical 'hero' and the best singer/songwriter ever) it's good enough for me . . . . that's a rally fantastic song This is a brilliant thread, but confusing if only one (cover) version is quoted, with no reference, for comparison, to the original (as is sometimes the case)
Not sure if this betters Glen Campbell’s original version but it’s bloody close. Possibly one of the greatest songs of all time, in my opinion.
Of course Dylan started using the Hendrix version on tour. The opening riff meant it was one of the few songs you knew immediately. Most of his songs in concert it took a while to work out what he was singing.
So quote the bloody original, man, so that we can compare . . . . and give an opinion This thread could last 'forever' if . . . .
Sorry don't know how to add the videos. I liked the Matt Cardle version When we Collide. However when I heard the original Biffy Clyro song Many of Horror, I must admit I preferred the original. Totally agree on Disturbed - absolutely brilliant version.
Agree with Evil about the Animals but one I always liked being a Ska fan Did also like the original by Labi Siffre. Think it’s easier to prefer a cover when you haven’t heard the original first. Or for me an absolutely amazing cover of Billie Jean.
The Eagles covered their own own "Classic" Hotel California on their comeback concert... IMO much better
I also liked Afterhere's slow version used as the opener to the recent TV adaptation of vanity Fair, but as with most including Mr Tambourine Man its Dylans versions that I prefer, he is pure genious.
