Funny isn't it, the Tories and media absolutely slated Labour during the general election for suggesting a budget of £500bn for infrastructure. Rishi today announces Tories will be spending £640bn <laugh> <doh>

Supermarket shelves here in Sicily. Apparently it is possible to be on lockdown and not lose your goddamn mind. Is the difference because of the individualistic culture in Aus/UK/US? Or is it just that Italians know how to make their own pasta and also use bidets? #italylockdown

There is a precedent for this, tbf. Harold McMillan's Tory government invested massively in housing, infrastructure, health and education throughout the 1950s.

At the time it was felt that a sea change in British politics had occurred as a result if the Great Depression and WWII. The left had won a lot of the economic arguments, the role of government in providing for it's citizens was firmly established, and the Tories embraced One Nation Conservatism in order to remain relevant.

Margaret Thatcher binned all that off, and for the next 50 years the chill winds of market forces were held to be sacrosanct, by New Labour as much as by the Tories. History goes in cycles, and the wheel has turned again. On the Tories watch, ironically. But basically, Labour under Corbyn really have won the argument. For now.

...but not the power sadly. And that may prove important in terms of who is doing the spending and where. We will see who this spending will ultimately benefit especially for the fallout from the coronavirus.

The evolution of man has resulted much through animal cruelty, but if it makes it easier for you to blame the Chinese.
