I know very little about the legal system but I do know that you're correct in saying that it contains elements of Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Norman laws. However, there are very few nations in Europe who have not been, in one way or another, influenced or affected by those cultures. So, while I'm sure there are big differences, there must also be significant similarities between the various European legal systems.

Unlike the legal system, I am fairly confident that I know a bit about heritage. I can see no way that the EU would be detrimental to UK heritage. Our history is inextricably linked with Europe. Even as far back as the Bronze Age the inhabitants of these islands were involved in trade (exchange is probably a better word) with continental Europe, and there have been various large-scale migration events (and that's whether or not you believe in a big Anglo-Saxon migration) up to the Norman Conquest. Even after that we always defined ourselves in relation to the Europeans. I don't think even a federal Europe would erode our heritage. The Scots have retained their cultural heritage and maintained their own identity despite being a part of the Union since 1706, so have the Welsh, whose status as a state in it's own right is confusing and unclear. Even in the US, the various states retain their own unique identities.

So I really don't believe that it would be a case of trading our heritage for a better standard of living, not to any meaningful extent anyway. I think that there are much bigger threats to our heritage than the EU out there, such as anti-monarchists, for example.

That is what's so frightening, people actually do believe it. They also believed we would be building a new hospital every week with the £300 million a week we were paying to the EU (when we haven't got enough staff to work in the ones we already have), that a female paediatrician was a *****phile, and that there would be shortages of toilet paper because of this corona virus. They read it in the right wing press and on Faecesbook. These people cannot understand that the right wing press have an agenda and Faecesbook is Chinese whispers of unsubstantiated gossip at best, and complete and utter lies at worst.

I obviously failed to make my point clearly.
Perhaps a shorter post might have done it.

Under the EU our courts were subservient to the European Court.
Our Laws were subservient to EU Laws.
Many EU Laws are formulated and enacted by the EU Civil Service, the EU Parliament at best being a 'rubber stamping office' and at worst it's only real function is to generate huge expenses for the Members.

I find this to be unacceptable TO ME.

And I agree that as a Nation we have a long history of trading with Europe.
    Long may this continue.
We also have a long record of welcoming Immigrants and learning from them.
(Think St Peters, 674 and Glass).
No problems about this from me.

But DH 4 asked a simple enough question, ----

Please give some examples of the regulations that you imply have a negative impact on British citizens lives.

My replies have simply been an attempt to provide him with at least one example.

And you have put forward a reasoned answer of your opinion of my question. You are entitled to your opinion and in one respect I agree with you. Anyway the match is kicking off soon. Haway the Lads.

I understood what you intended with your replies and perhaps it is me that didn't explain my point well enough.

I wasn't trying to make a specific point about a history of trade (I mentioned trade because it is now thought that the Beaker culture was brought to Britain in the Bronze Age through trade and exchange rather than through movement of people, as used to be thought). Nor was I trying to make a point about immigration.

Instead, what I was trying to do was elaborate on the point about the legal system being based on Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Norse, Norman etc traditions. I was trying to point out that across Europe as a whole, we are so culturally intertwined and inter-related that I can't see how laws made in Brussels are culturally any different from laws made in this country. The roots of the legal systems across Europe must be largely very similar. I was then trying to go on to make the point that despite these huge cultural similarities and largely the same roots, individual groups (e.g. the Scots) can retain their individual identities despite being part of a bigger entity.

You said "Maybe they should just apply for citizenship of an EU country and leave the rest of US in peace" As you do not live in the UK, you therefore by a simple process of elimination, you are one of THEM and not US who live in the United Kingdom paying our taxes and spending our money in the UK economy. Perhaps he could have said "If you are so anti Europe, and pro "British", 1.why have you left Britain to go and live in a foreign country. 2. Seeing as you have turned your back on Britain, can you not see the hypocrisy of saying that people who choose to live in their native country are not as patriotic as your good self about the UK?

I lived in the UK and paid my taxes there until I retired.

Never in that time did I run the country down, or display a lack of belief in the abilities of its people.

I don't think that you can look in the mirror and honestly say the same thing.

I won't add the adjective that I think applies to you and some others with your attitude.

Also, the word 'us' is a collective for a mindset, not just a location!

I’ve heard remainers on this forum just in the last couple weeks saying this country is about to get everything it deserves for voting to leave.

Fair enough. I can't say I've noticed any of that. Seems a strange attitude to me. I didn't want to leave but now we have the only option I can see is to get on with it and make a success of it. It's definitely time to stop the arguing, no matter what side of the fence you're on. Or, more accurately, used to be on.
