'Need a little bit of success' - Neil Warnock on whether it is do or die for Lee Johnson at Bristol City
The familiar foe has had his say.

Neil Warnock says Bristol City are looking for some success to add to crown the achievement of making Ashton Gate such an impressive stadium.

Warnock - a familiar foe of many Robins fans - was making his first appearance on Quest's EFL highlights show, and was asked whether this season was 'do or die' for Lee Johnson at the club.

The former Cardiff City boss, who has often enjoyed winding up the Robins, said that he thinks Johnson will continue to retain the backing of the Lansdowns, but that the club need to make the play-offs in order to continue growing.

Warnock said: "I think we have said it before, the chairman is really supportive of Lee.

"He is desperate to get them into the play-offs, as they haven’t managed to get in the play-offs yet.

"I would imagine he's desperate, as the ground, I don’t know if you have seen it, is fabulous now, the ground.

"What they have done to the ground is amazing. All they need now is that little bit of success."

Johnson and Warnock have had some run-ins in the past, but the Robins boss said last November that he did quite like the veteran manager.

Warnock also backed Robins keeper Niki Maenpaa, who Fulham boss Scott Parker said should have given away a penalty in Saturday's 1-1 draw with the Cottagers when colliding with Tom Cairney.

"He made a mistake, the goalkeeper," he said.

"When you watch it, he gets the man first before he goes down on the ball.

"I don't think the ref should give that.

"It's either way, I think he could give or it he couldn't, so I'll let him off for that."

"What they have done to the ground is amazing. All they need now is that little bit of success."

A lot of subtle little digs there, he retains confidence of the owner, got to make the playoffs to continue our growth, the ground is amazing but LJ needs a bit of success to match his surroundings.

I don't think I disagree with the old warhorse.

No, he has always said what he believes in quiet times like now... it was when the managers mantle falls he spices it up .. but there was always truth in it … 99%of the time i THINK NEXT SEASON HE WILL HAVE A CLUB hopefully not Sheff WED before we play them in a week or so!

If Johnson fails to get a playoff spot then bring in Neil Warnock to take us up-the squad is here.

Or if SL is feeling generous go get the Millwall manager.

Red Robin, you really do contradict yourself constantly, you moan how poor our style of football has been 'for years' apparently, then advocate for a manager who is synonymous with a terrible style of football..... You do keep us entertained on here with your shoot from the hip comments.

I actually think Gary Rowett is a pretty decent manager at this level, but why would he leave Millwall now after being out of work for a while previously, it wouldn't look good.

I bet he wouldn’t have been so gracious about that Maenpaa penalty ‘let-off’ if we’d been playing one of his teams!!!!

He's pretty much spot on with all the comments I'd say.

A pretty accurate summary if you ask me. He talks a lot of sense, when he’s not talking nonsense, if you know what I mean.

Is the rumour true that he said he would like to manage us one day? I’ve read it a few times in the various chat rooms but never seen any hard evidence.

It may be is time of life - or maybe it's his true personality coming out now that he's retired? NW seems to have mellowed quite strikingly over this past season. When he was at Cardiff, we didn't see the rants and blaming the officials/grass/weather etc that used to be his trademark. When we beat them in his last game there, he was quite calm in his post-match comments and I thought he came over as quite calm and chilled in his recent punditry for Sky and Quest.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
Maybe some of the fire has gone from his belly? If so that's a shame for football - both Mrs R&W and I looked forward to watching his meltdowns. I'd call her in from the next room 'Warnock's on'.. and she'd come running in to see who he would blame this week!
Having said that, it's probably better for his health - you can't keep going off your head with anger at 71 years old - you'd blow a gasket!! Plus, he's had a lot of family issues to deal with.
I can't imagine him going in front of the TV cameras after a defeat and saying 'the better side won'.... it wouldn't be the same - it would be BORING!!!!!

Have to say that I agree with all of this. He was very chilled after we beat them 1-0 in Cardiff and he seemed to take it all in his stride which is a marked shift change from how he was when he first went there, and before that how he was at Palace and Sheffield United etc.
He's a good old boy though, and English football will be all the poorer when he leaves the game for good.
