A short term solution, or a sign of things to come?

Maybe its just lazy journalism, or maybe its right on the mark but one way or the other, I feel it is a sign if the times. Money is very tight IMO all over the EPL (outside the Man City & Chelsea buying potential) and most clubs are going to have to cut their cloth to suit their pockets.

McFadden isn't Darren Bent or Asamoah Gyan but what he is, undoubtedly, is a far more 'cost effective' proposition. He is also, if fit of course, a decent acquisition IMO and wouldnt be coming here just to move somewhere else in 6 months or a year. He is known to the manager and as a Glasgow born jock, would be happy with life in the north of England, you would think?

He isn't a prolific goalscorer by any stretch of the imagination but works hard for the team and gets stuck in. He does have a better international goal scoring record (worryingly though, so did David Healy) and as an alternative to the big men, he would be a decent shout from the bench. If Frazier Campbell is still targeting February or March as a comeback for games, then he wont be available again this season IMO, so we do need cover. McFadden wouldnt excite me but he wouldnt make me depressed either. Decent cover for the striking berths and comes with a lot of experience.

I think the question or point I am trying to raise is that despite talk of Bruce saying he would like £20m in January or next summer, the reality is that signings like McFadden are probably more likely than another Gyan or Cisse and we are going to have to get used to that fact as the years roll on.

We have ONE experienced striker at the club. Just one, and even he's on loan.

To me it's a no brainer, if McFadden is available sign him up.

I agree that our brief flirtation with "harrods shopping" is over and that the club per say doesn't have a striker and that needs to be addressed as soon as.

Not for me ! We have spent big money on a striker let's get him in and give him a chance. He won't learn by sitting on the bench.

I would see Mcfadden to be behind i and Wickham an option and it would seem a win win to me.

    Quality summation mate. Lol

McFadden would give us that 4th striker we do need and agreed its a no brainer short term. My concern is that neither Bent or Gyan will be replaced like for like (quality) otherwise we would have done so with the likes of Cisse. He was going to cost £12 or £13m and that would be like for like for Bent. Why want he bought? I reckon the money trail has ended here in August 2011.

Prepare for McFadden type replacements from now on, not the ones we all hoped for. I think the money is gone.

I'm not so sure.. I think the reason it wasn't done is because the anton transfer dragged on too long, and we didn't have time to bring anyone else in. The only reason imo we would have sold, at the time, one of our fict choice cb pairing, was to raise money for someone we needed more deparately, i.e. a striker. But the deal didn't get done until the last minute of the transfer window so it was too late for Bruce to get his man. Add in the reported 6m (has this ever been confirmed?) loan deal for gyan and I think we have quite a hefty transfer kitty for jan / next summer. By my reckoning, since jan 2011, we have made about £15m profit in the transfer market. While I don't think Short is willing to chuck money at the club, he's no Fat Mike either, I think that money will be reinvested. I could be wrong though..

Regarding McFadden, it depends for me on what he's after. The article says Birmingham can't meet his personal terms, which is why I'm a bit cautious. If we can get him on a decent, short-term deal, then sure it would be nice to have him as an extra option. If he's after say £40k a week for 3 years I'd tell him to bugger off lol. He's not a bad player, but I'd rather we save the wages and bring in a top notch striker in jan.

I dont think the money has gone, I just think with Bruce bringing in so many players over the summer, it cost more than anyone of us realise, yes they were free transfers but you have the wages to consider (and other fees), and Brown/O'Shea wont be on a pittance, and they have to balance the books with the Uefa fair play crap.

The big difference this year for me is, we have goal scoring midfielders (if they play to their best) before we would struggle to get 10 goals all season from our midfield.

Next season, if we just bring in 1-2 players, then we can spend 20 million on them, this season, the money is there, but the financial fair play has our hands tied somewhat.

Personally i would have said screw the fair play, bought the players we needed, and then cut back the next 2 years, but then if we bought the players, and got relegated, we would be screwed, so its catch 22.

As for McFadden, no thankyou, not on a 3-4 year contrct anyway, offer him a 9 month contract, if he says no, tell him where to go. (he is a one i would like to do a Bent/Gyan).

Decent player, another option. Wouldn't complain. Think we're expecting a bit too much considering we can get him on a free, on low wages and outside the transfer window which is helpful due to Gyan's digression.

Not often I disagree with the majority, but on this occasion folks I have to very strongly disagree, Ive seen an awfull lot of McFadden over the last few years when working at Goodison and I am telling you now, hes bloody awful, bone idol, goes missing for large periods of the game and very lazy when not interested. Also very injury prone. Off the pitch, hes not the most approachable of blokes, downright rude and Ive lost count the number of times hes totally ignored young kids asking for an autograph. Na I dont want him at my club regardless of his ' Premiership experience .Besides last I heard he was close to signing for Wolves.

I never said a 3 or 4 year deal. I would offer him terms until August and see how it goes form there. Hes no replacement for either Judas or Greedyhowwa but he is another experienced body until the season is out. I dont see Bruce being allowed to slash out in January on anyone significant. If he was to bring a true replacement for Bent in, it would have been this summer not in January.

If McFadden wants a 3 year deal, let Wolves have him.

I wish we had some hard ****s in the side at the moment.

Not sackless gets like Cattermole, at fault again for conceding against Chelsea.

Experienced he is but how good not sure. Never really been a fan. He could do a job as a 4th striker but what about Tounkara Noble or even Cook being given the chance before bringing in what everyone appears to think a fourth striker.
