Looks like Pep grew his beard out further and donned Captain Birdseye's hat to cover his chrome dome.

I seem to remember a directive that only the captain was allowed to talk to the ref, few years ago and like all fa directives slowly got forgotten about.

I'm not sure why we see the captain as a big deal, give it to the longest serving player and be done with it. It's not like Henderson gets more vocal if hes got the armband on, or vvd would defer to lovren if he got the band.

I really wish they would implement this properly. I hate seeing a crowd of players getting in the ref's face the way they do.

I'm fairly sure the only reason they dont do this, is because some of the language on the pitch is unfit for public consumption

That's the main reason I want them to do it, it'll make the players show respect. If they don't they'll look like a right ****

I agree. If they are excessively abusive then they could be punished retrospectively. There's no reason why footballers should behave like a gang of Saturday-night pissheads, it's just a habit. And one that needs breaking, imo.

I always tried to show respect to the ref when playing but was as guilty as anyone when decision got the better if me so understand it from both sides. That's not me saying the abusive way is right, it 100% isn't!

Ironically, you more likely to get the ref to listen if you're not abusive!

Anyone can get emotionally involved and toss the odd "Oh **** off" at the ref in a highly charged situation. It's more the spitting abuse three inches from his nose I'm concerned with. Whether or not it's barely controlled rage or a cynical attempt to intimidate, I still think it's unacceptable. There are few areas of life where you can get away with behaviour like that, and I don't think anyone should be expected to put up with it.
And before anyone piles in with talk PGMOL or **** refs, it's not about that, it's about respect for the position. Bad officiating is a separate issue.

100% agree. They're obviously the best we have to offer in this country but they could be the ****test refs in the world, they are still human, in charge and would perform better if respected.

Why would Football Association and Manchester United executive David Gill implement a Football Association rule that punishes the behaviour of Manchester United players?
