As a 'fanatic' who has supported his local team all his life through thick and thin I disagree with you.

Wasn't even the Cervix Crew...just seemed to be Cleggy and Victoria Wood types from rural West Yorkshire

This kind of Keystone Cops crowd control would have had 91 other police matchday coommanders shaking their heads in disbelief. It's like the stewards and police have never attended a football game before.

Swept under the carpet already, it never happened.

What are you exactly disagreeing with ?
I'm a lifelong fan of my local team too. I just believe in freedom of choice, not blind intolerance of other's choices, which is my point.

    They're either liars

    Or chronically incompetent.

    Or both.

Either way, there'll be no apology or admission of **** up.

    Do the math.

And what if the football fans supported Germany and Argentina in large numbers at a world cup ??

I don't agree the globalisation of football support, for example armchair support for, say, Manchester United from people who live in, say, Thailand. I don't agree with parents from, say, Hull buying their children football kits from cities the other side of the country, Liverpool for example, I find this absurd. I find the freedom to seek the sporting glory of cities miles from your home town morally wrong to be honest. I know I'm in a minority and I've worked with many people who say their children are Man Utd, or Newcastle, or Chelsea etc but I could not do that thank you very much.

Does that mean you would indoctrinate your kids into supporting your team ? How about your tastes in music ? Films ? Literature ? Politics.
    That would be absurd.

My point is if most of the country supported Argentina or Germany etc in a World Cup knock out match would you find that odd ?

His point is, that most people are proud of the town/city/country they're from and the support of their local club is an extension of that pride. When you take that out the equation and just pick a team from a place that you have no connection to, or affinity with, just because they're successful, then you lose so much of what supporting a football club is all about.

The national team comparison is a good one, if English people supported Germany or Brazil in the World Cup, people would think they were mental, but it's really no different, it's just picking a team that's more likely to win, rather than the one that's yours by birth.

My kids were free to choose their own career path, listen to whatever music they wanted, read anything they wanted, have any politics they wanted, but if they didn't support City, I'd disown them.

I assume the country you're alluding to is England ?
They wouldn't would they ? Most would have self chosen allegience to England would they not ?
Unless they were Scots living in London or Belfast.

Then why the difference in your own City versus another City .
Why support a place you dont come from over your own ?
I find it bizarre and can never get my head around it .

No it wouldn't but I'd prefer to use the term influence rather than indoctrinate.

If you were born in Hull and your parents (who had no interest in Football) moved to London when you were six I guarantee you’d not support Hull but you would support England in the World Cup. Take it a step further, they move to Manchester when you’re 6 and then to London when you’re 13 where you remained as you met the love of your life and you got a decent job. Your decent job meant you moved from one side of London to the other, you’d support England but which club team would you support? Your interest in football would have started whilst resident in Manchester but you’d have lived in London most your life and you were born in Hull but limited memories. Chances are you’d be a Manchester fan yet you were not born there and you didn’t live there very long. The supporting the club team but different national team where you are born argument is so flawed

I understand people who support a club from a city that their family are from, or someone who moves to a place to live and it becomes their adopted home, or all sorts of other reasons that connect a person with a place, it’s just those who have no connection to a place and pick a random club just because they’re successful that I don’t get.

You've been in Canada to long . You haven't been party the small brained RL FC and Rovers fans who surprise surprise can support their local rugby side but actually hate Hull City , love it when we lose , but also avidly support one of Liverpool , Man U , Chelsea , Arsenal , Leeds , Tottenham . During the next week I expect my support of Hull City to be ridiculed by by persons who have been born and bred locally who support Hull FC or Hull kr but for football love when City lose and support a top third premier League team or Leeds .
