Cor blimey ‘a rest day’ is the forum attempting to go middle class?!? Similarly at work the other day some old girl referred to going to the old toilet as ‘I’m off for a comfort break’. I think the shame will force her to resign within the week…
I'd not heard it until I started in Prison Service. That's what they call day off. Called a rota day where I work now
Remember working down pit, 39 hours a day if you were lucky .... Kids don't know there born these day's
Quite right, NDS. These pampered kids with their rest days and their bottles of filtered volcanic spring water....I remember picking potatoes, dawn to dusk, during WW2. Half a raw potato for supper and your mum told you that the maggots were a valuable source of protein. On to higher matters, and the 5f sprint at 2.05 is a little shaft of sunshine on a gloomy day. I think that Final Legacy can beat probable favourite Gorgeous General on these terms, She might just be the only one of these that's improving a bit (I know that's a relative term for horses rated in the 40/50s), and this has historically been Derrick Shaw's time of year. Not a race to get too analytical about, but 9-4 or so looks fair, and the fact that Hugh Taylor puts up Arzaak might even bump the price a bit.
I am with Hugh on the first, I think Arzaak is a cut above this field at his best. He is a bet in the 2.05 In the 2.35 I can't be having Brooklyn Boy at odds on. He might win, but this is tougher and he should be odds against. I have backed Tigray who has the course form, the distance form and is in decent enough form this season. 3:35 Raydiance is the class horse and has the course form.
Another card at Southwell today - 5:00 - Moveonup - has the pace to lead, likes course and distance and has form in the book recently. I fear he might find one too good, but at over 2/1 he should be a bet. 5:30 - Tigray surely goes off shorter than the 15/8 available? He made some interesting ground up last time in a much better race. As long as they don't go too slowly, he surely picks this field up and wins going away. First Flight is the danger, he has positive sire statistics and the form in the book. However I think Tigray is the better horse and proven on the surface. 6:00 - Going Native should hack up again. However he isn't the easiest to predict and does fold tamely at times. Not one to be betting at near evens. The one that catches the eye is the old boy Sellingallthetime, but more than a leap of faith would be needed to be backing him off even this basement mark. 7:00 - Keep an eye on the market for Custard The Dragon. I don't think today is the day for him, but if the money comes, then take note. He is the class act in the race and whilst laboured the last twice, he could win this quite easily on his other back form. It is just whether he is right and ready today. Just the two bets early on the card.
Just the one for me at Southwell and definitely falls into the speculative category. 6:30 - Zeyzoun 50/1 ew 3 places
3:10 Tizwotitiz @ 10s and Champagne Mondays @ 11s Both EW. The former is by a sire who does ok at Southwell, and ran ok on his only run here, and Champagne Mondays is a course regular. Awful race and my thoughts are that we want to be drawn low.
I've never believed in following horses (you tend to end up making excuses for them when they get beat) but I think there's a case for giving Final Legacy another chance in the 2.20 today. Hayley and Hollie are easily the strongest riders in this all-girl field, and I think that Hollie's on the better horse. Final Legacy wasn't particularly unlucky last time: Jamin might have kept her closer to the action, but she was a bit lethargic from the box, and I'm not inclined to blame the jockey. Gorgeous General looked like the best horse on the day anyway. This race looks easier to win, and 2-1 or thereabouts isn't ridiculous. Inexplicably (to me) the ATR tissue has put Lydiate Lady in as favourite, but unless Karen Tutty can slip the Philosopher's Stone into the saddlecloth, I really think that's got no chance at all. I'll be off-thread for a while, so here's one to keep you warm. I know nothing of jump-racing, but a friend of long standing and sound judgement from Ireland tells me that CALVIN will be carrying a considerable amount of his money in the Northern Trust novice handicap chase on Tuesday (4.50). Be lucky.
The horse is called Galvin Rainer, not Calvin. Just incase you were planning on jotting down the name for a monkey on the nose on the day
As STH says, make sure you put G rather than C. I was wondering why they named a horse after one of the Chipmunks. Galvin is very well weighted and is on my shortlist along with Venetian horse Espoir De Guye. anyway, more importantly 1 - hope the absence is nothing serious 2- I like Mssr Attwater’s horse in the sprint. The top Epsom trainer is in good form and this horse caught the eye in both recent runs
Sorry about the typo, boys - I just recited what yer man told me without bothering to check it. (Alternatively, of course, it may have been a subconscious bellow of support for the forces of Reformation Protestantism against the hordes of Irish priests poised to invade us). Thanks for asking, Nass, but there's no cause for concern. Another great-grandchild has arrived, and my unique childminding skills are required for the next few weeks in some East Anglian mudhole where I can't get a wifi signal. I intend to spend the long dull days plotting a punt on Pinatubo in the 2000G which will make the Druid's Lodge mob look like two-bob amateurs.
