Off Topic Many Worlds Interpretation of the Universe

Space, or rather the universe, may well be infinite. Then again, it might not. No-one knows. This is a canny interview from Professor Joseph Silk, Head of Astrophysics at Oxford University, so it's fair to say he knows his stuff. Well, apart from whether the universe is infinite or not.

I can't get my head round it, how can space being finite be a possibility? There can't be a cutoff point where you say this is how big the universe is because what's on the other side of the cutoff? I'm not doubting the words of academics like Silk I'm just not clever enough to understand it.

 

So in another universe I’ve got loads of hair , highly intelligent, rich and lucky as fook..

Apparently, there is stuff of this nature that no one has an explanation for other than theology. Which is why I think keeping an open mind with regard to religion is important.

 

One explanation is we are on the inner surface of a torus. Imagine a massive ring doughnut, bigger than Homer could eat, and scoop out all the dough. Now you have a hollow ring doughnut and the universe exists on the inside surface of it. But because it's so big it appears as a flat surface in our immediate area of observation and measurements. However, on a massive scale, which is too big for us to measure, it's actually a curved surface.

 

And, I have to say, my two brothers and I were more than happy to accommodate you ...

Some days I find it all fascinating , and watch those “ how big is the universe” things on YouTube . On others I think why wonder , cos can the boffins really without doubt say that a galaxy is 4 trillion light years away but actually isn’t there anymore because it died ages ago ? I just hope that we go to another level of life when we leave here with additional senses that allow us to comprehend this stuff

well as most of you lads know the higgs bosun theory could be possible, but the universe never started and is infinite in length which is amazing, and to the fact i asked these genius profs, will Andy carroll ever play a game again and they said sorry cannot answer that.

it's genetics mate, your body is made up from generations past and your given an allotted time right at birth, it's up to you what you do with it.
I'm not anti faith or Christianity brought up a Methodist and did the usual Sunday School, church thing as a kid but as I got older just can't accept is all down to a higher body etc.
Your genes are passed down to you and if your unlucky you end up with lots of health issues, or the other way round if your lucky.
Why do some families have longevity, like the Queen for instance, and others, bit like mine whose parents die relatively young (both 50s for my parents) so as I'm about to turn 71 in a fortnight I'm on borrowed time but I don't worry about it.Thanks

I'm a fan of Azimov and Arthur C Clark.

While neither went so far as to include multiple universes, as far as I know, Isaac came close with 'The Gods Themselves'.
This speculates about multi universes but is concerned only with ours and another where the laws of Physics differ.
The plot surrounds the possibility of mutual benefits that such a situation might provide.

Dr Azimov, to give him his title, was by training a Biochemist.
One of his short stories, in Azimov's Mysteries is 'Pâté de Foie Gras'.
It's a spoof science article that explains how a goose might lay golden eggs.

To someone like me, who knows diddly squat about Biochemistry, it was fascinating, but then everything he wrote that I've read has been fascinating.

 

The Bible does state that the universe had a beginning like. We never caught up with that until the 50's and 60's with measurements of distant galaxies, quasers and then the Cosmic Radiation Background. And even while this was going on in astronomy, there were still people in that field who advocated a solid state universe, which states the universe has no beginning or end. Sir Frederick Hoyle was probably the most prominent of these and I've always liked the fact that it was Hoyle who coined the term 'big bang' and he didn't believe in it, he was a firm advocate if the solid state model.
