One of the biggest number twos of all time, Eddie Irvine, has opened his big mouth again, calling Jenson Button the "best number two" in F1. Do you agree or do you think another driver deserves this dubious accolade? If so, which one and why?
Careful mate, this thread is very likely to anger certain people (such as myself). I've always believed that team favouritism ruins the sportsmanship of F1. Like last year when Massa was told to back off I thought that was wrong and that if Alonso was truly faster he should have been able to pass him, not go to his team. But if by "number two" you mean the crude, alternative meaning, then it's Karthikeyan.
at the title. Eddie Irvine is one of the biggest number twos in every sense of the phrase. I don't how you'd judge this really. There are two types of number two; contractual number twos who aren't allowed to attack, and natural number twos who are unable to attack. Clearly from their results, neither McLaren driver is a number two. Massa and Webber clearly are, whether they're allowed to or not they don't threaten their teammates very often. Massa is most compliant, so if your team was focussed on one driver Massa would be the better choice. Webber is a more consistent points scorer, so if you wanted a second driver to help you with the constructors he'd be your man.
Right! Well, after I posted the poll I released that I'm not sure myself. Like you, I hate all that move over, hold station stuff because it does ruin the spectacle. I thought it was a toss up between Massa and Webber: Massa seems more amenable and a better team mate than Webber but I voted Webber because of the mysterious video which apparently makes him look like he's testing parts for next year. I doubt RBR are taking similar risks with Vettel's car. Maybe the question should be, Mark Webber: number two or test driver?
Well seeing as Button is a world champion (unlike Eddie Irvine) and is beating his team mate (unlike Eddie Irvine) at the moment he obviously is not a number two driver (unlike Eddie Irvine). I do not think there are any number two drivers in any of the teams at the moment. I loved Ted Kravitz's retort to Eddie Irvine at Monza. I reckon he should have made a few talks with Hamilton after Canada about a possible team swap. I reckon he's not happy at Red Bull and it's affecting his results and that if he went to McLaren or Ferrari he'd do better. Plus I'd like to see a Hamilton/Vettel partnership that would implode. I think he'll still drive in 2013 because of the ever-changing driver market. Button wants to go to Ferrari, which frees up his McLaren spot for someone like Webber which leaves a Red Bull spot open for one of the juniors like Ricciardo. But that's all speculation. BTW I change my comment about the biggest "number two" to Chandhok. This isn't racist to Indians, they're both just ****.
out of all the number 2 drivers, button is the strongest.yeah he has more points than lewis, doesnt mean he's a better driver.lewis is just having a shocker of a season, and buttons having a great one.
lol... That's the first time that I've actually watched that. Funny stuff. Give that man a prize. Irvine is such a door-knob. It could have only been more funny if he'd have called it a "DFS button".
I couldn't agree more. I do think Webber would perform better and be happier in another team. And just because Dr. Marko has decreed that Webber will retire after next year, I don't think he will and anyway it's none of Marko's business, or it shouldn't be. As for Chandhok, yes, he's ****, IMAO, but he's a charming **** Regarding the poll, I'm surprised about the votes for Button because I just can't see him as a number two driver.
Everyone who voted Button, does that mean you think Hamilton is number one in the team? And is that because of being more skillful or just for have been in the team longer? Very curious, I don't see any difference between them atm in terms of leadership or potential to win.
Welcome to the forum, Tiphaine. So does that mean you're a Button fan or you think he's a bit of a ****?
Great drivers don't have bad seasons they may have a bad race now and then but never a bad season, especially when the so called bad season they are having is their own fault! That isn't a great driver it's not even a good one, what it is, is a sloppy one. So that makes Lewis a sloppy number 2
I voted Button, the reason I voted for him, is that if it came down to supporting him or Hamilton I really think MacLaren would support Hamilton. I also rate Button as the fastest driver out of teh options of teh number 2 drivers. If Massa is on form, like he was before his accident, he would be right up there. But at the moment he is a little lost and I don't expect Massa to remain with Ferrari after next year.
When Ron was in charge I probably would agree but that wouldn't happen under Whitmarsh, in fact if anything Martin comes down on the side of Jenson, judging by his after race interviews he always mentions and praises Jenson and has very little to say about Lewis. So for that reason I would say Jenson is the favored driver at McLaren. Although they are treated equally. Also If it came down to it surely any team would favor the driver who was ahead on points and still had a shot at the title? anything else would just be stupidity..
Absolutely beautiful from Ted Kravitz! His final dismissal is nothing short of perfection! To add my two-penneth: Eddie Irvine is one of the least deserving drivers to have done a stinking number two jobbie in an F1 carâ¦
