Just watched this interesting video after reading a New York Times article some time back on how Liverpool has serious focus on data in controlling all aspects of the club. Guess this run we are having is not a freak accident
You are of course totally correct It is not a freak accident It is because we are - lucky - benefitting from VAR - the best of a rather **** bunch of teams Video posted is way to sensible to have any effect on the running of our club
The reality we are living in the age of big data and AI. It is a fact whoever is using these tools is having a massive advantage over the competition. I have found some of Liverpool's play mechanical in that you know what is coming but you cannot stop it. Some people may hate stats but there is a reason most of our signings have succeeded. The data generated on Robertson just goes to show how you cannot ignore these numbers. I personally beleive Klopp is only outperforming City because he has embraced the future. The scary part is many coaches are still archaic in how they manage their clubs and it will take time to catch up. The CVs of the data team are just staggering.
I think there is more to it than that..............how did he do it at Dortmund? Stats play a massive part in the modern game but is still only one part of a bigger picture.
To be fair, City also have a big team of analysts and utilise big data. Difference is, they may not scrutinise that data as much as we do because they don’t need to look at ‘value’ as they have unlimited resources. I also attended a talk by Darren Burgess, who used to work at LFC and recently left Arsenal and he mentioned that most big clubs are now on board with data analytics. Arsenal recently acquired a data company who literally watch all matches across the major and minor leagues and plot the data points for every minute for every player.
