It's a racist term and the OED should state that clearly.

 

I can see why Baddiel has got an issue with it, but to be fair to the OED they are just citing its use rather than defining it.

Football fans don't really have any right to claim a racist word as their own. There's no particular Jewish association with Spurs other than lots of Jews live in North London.

It's like any other London club's fans calling themselves the ****** Army or Paki Army, on the back of the ethnic diversity in the area.

The word Yid no longer has the meaning it used to have. That is what confuses this entire issue.

Yid now means “Spurs fan who has no problem with Jewish people.”

Baddiel would do better to employ his time in attacking those among his own number, and Spanners fans, who make hissing noises at us, mocking the millions who were murdered in concentration camps.

 

Spurs have a small fan base compared to the millions of Jews around the world who could be offended by the word.

I’d say it’s pretty much only used now to refer to Spurs fans and I support them ‘owning’ the word. If rivals want to be anti-Semitic then they will be whether you ban a word or not.
