Wigan Athletic host Tottenham Hotspur at the DW Stadium on Saturday 24th September 2011 in a Matchday 6 Premier League game of the 2011-12 season (game 5 for Spurs).

This will be the 14th time the two teams have met since Wigan Athletic gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2005-06 season.

Wigan Athletic were formed in 1932 after the demise of Wigan Borough and they gained their Football League status in 1978.

The first meeting between the two clubs came at Wigan's ground in November 2005 and resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with goals from Robbie Keane and Edgar Davids. Wigan's goal was scored by Lee McCulloch late in the game.

The reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in February 2006 was a 2-2 draw with Tottenham's goals coming from Mido and Jermain Defoe and Wigan's from Andreas Johansson who had put the Lancashire club ahead twice.

Spurs also took four points off Wigan in the 2006-07 season with a 3-1 home win in November 2006 with goals from Jermain Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov and Aaron Lennon after Wigan's Henri Camara had put the Lattics ahead.

The points were shared in a 6-goal thriller at the JJB Stadium in April 2007 with a goal from Dimitar Berbatov and a Robbie Keane brace for Spurs while Emil Heskey, Leighton Baines and Paul Scharner were on the scoresheet for Wigan.

Tottenham Hotspur once again took four Premier League points off Wigan in the 2007-08 season with a 4-0 win at the Lane in November 2007. Jermaine Jenas scored twice and there were also goals for Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent.

Dimitar Berbatov scored for Spurs in the 1-1 draw at Wigan in April 2008 with Emil Heskey grabbing the equaliser.

The 2008-09 season saw Wigan take four points after a goalless draw at White Hart Lane and a 1-0 win in January 2009 thanks to Maynor Figueroa injury time winner.

Spurs beat Wigan in the FA Cup third round that season 3-1 with a brace of goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and one from Luka Modric. Wigan's goal was scored by Henri Camara.

Maximum points were taken by Spurs in the 2009-10 season after a massive 9-1 home win in November 2009, which saw Jermain Defoe become only the third player after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole to score five goals in a Premier League match. There were also goals from Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, Niko Krajcar and David Bentley. Wigan's goal was scored by Paul Scharner. Amazingly enough, Spurs only led 1-0 at half-time and the eight goals scored in the second half by Spurs all came within 39 minutes.

Jermain Defoe's goal and a brace from Roman Pavlyuchenko saw Spurs to a 3-0 win at Wigan in February 2010.

Last season was another good one for Wigan, who took four points off Spurs. They won 1-0 at White Hart Lane in August 2010 with a second half goal from Hugo Rodallega. The match at the DW Stadium was goalless.

Overall, Spurs have won 6 of the 13 matches played so far with Wigan winning 2 and 5 matches drawn.

    Cheers for the write-up THFC6061.

Should be a tight game, reckon we'll play pretty much the same team as we did against Wolves and 'Pool with the only change being Rafa on the right instead of Niko. If we play like we have over the past two league games, we'll have a good chance of taking all 3 points.

Wigan were looking to sign Paul Stewart in the last transfer window, but it broke down when the lawyers couldn't work how so many sell on clauses would work. (So they packaged all his sell on clauses into a SIV and Moodys gave it a AAA rating.*)

    * bit of financial humour there

When did Mido play for Wigan? I don't remember that at all.

Glad we're getting our away game against Wigan out of the way early, before it turns into a bog.

I think Wigan's pitch is actually a hindrance to them, as Martinez likes his sides to play good football.
Pretty tough on that potato patch, once the rugby season gets going.

I'd like to see Kranjcar retain his starting place, if he's fit.
Give van der Vaart another run from the bench and bring him back to full fitness slowly.
He played a part in the last two games and he won't play against Shamrock Rovers, but I think we rushed him back a couple of times last season and he was never really 100%.

Mido went on loan to Wigan Athletic from Middlesbrough on 23rd January 2009 on a six month deal.

He scored on his Wigan debut, getting the equaliser (a penalty) in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

He also scored against Arsenal in a 1-4 defeat.

All told, he played 12 matches for Wigan, scoring twice.

    Thanks THFC6061 <ok>

True but they're more used to it and the hinderance to their football is lesser to ours, as we're a better football playing team/

I've had a blond moment <doh>, I was reading all this stuff about Wigans pitch and getting this fixture out the way, and i thought, idiots, we're at home! in the 1st post I'd just read the 'title' of the thread, didn't clock the club crests, or read the bold text, so believing it, just went straight into the small print!....why? <doh>...I was just about to launch a post full of mockery an all! <laugh>

As I said previously we have a good record there and JD loves playing there 2-0.
BTW has anyone noticed that we haven't conceded a goal in 360 mins (that's 4 matches for the non number people) 2 league & 2 cup.

Good news, however Di Santo seems to be getting a lot of luck with delfections lately! Let's hope it's not the case Saturday.
