Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Buddhism more 'fluid' (for want of a better word) than a lot of other religions, in that it's not about following a god as such but finding it inside yourself. If that's the case then it's not surprising that you get such a diverse set of interpretations. Obviously that's very simplistic and I might be way off but that's always been my basic understanding of it.
