There was a point about 6 yrs ago when I thought Vertonghen was a joke. He had been reportedly interesting Barcelona and it looked like it went to his head and he came across really badly imho. But he turned it around and put in 100% performances every week even when he was having a poor game. Has been a class professional and I hope for his sake that he gets a great send off. His performance at Wembley v Dortmund last season in the last 16 was a thing of joy.
I think there is an argument for giving him another year. Partly sentimental partly practical. He has been a great player for us and like Dawson before him has earned loyalty from the club. But more importantly having him around will be good for the likes of Sanchez and Tanganga to learn from and he can do a job in easier games. Not first choice anymore but still useful.
Totally agree with this. He has been a model professional and as one of the best defenders around for the last 6 years, he has so much to offer the up and coming lads.
At his age might he want more of a commitment than one year? He would probably have to take a drop in wages but might get a 2 or 3 year deal in Belgium or Holland.
I really feel for vert. He's been brilliant for spurs. I hope his career is not over yet. He still has much to offer. Maybe he needs the "Ledley King" treatment and plays sporadically.
Didn't see the match live (was working) have watched the penalty incident several times and in my opinion there was a little contact - he has taken some stick here and as you can imagine a lot of stick on the Saints forum, but if anyone thinks that Ings or Redmond, (or any other premier league striker for that matter) isn't going down when they feel contact, then are clearly not living in current world. Also if he wasn't touched why would he have gone down he was going past Gunn for a tap in nothing to gain in my opinion. I would rather players did stay on their feet, but that is not the modern way.
If he is happy to be backup and mentor younger players then I’m all for it. But maybe he still wants to play every week and be first choice. On a free transfer in the summer, he should be able to pick up a decent signing on fee and big wages somewhere.
Maybe back to Ajax? They're having a few issues at centre-half and have a couple of youngsters there with real potential.
I’ve often thought Jan would finish his career with Ajax. I didn’t expect his legs to go so quickly after this summer and I was hoping he could stay here at least another year but I think if he has plans to still play regularly then staying with us is not his best option. Amazing CB. One of the best I’ve seen at Spurs. I’m just disappointed for him that after giving us 8 years of service which have included his best years, we’ve been unable to provide him with a trophy. Him, Lloris and Kane all deserve something for what they’ve given this club football club (Dembele did too!). Would be great if Jose can mastermind an FA Cup to send him out on a high although I can imagine City will be will up for the cups after the way the league has gone.
Yes of course. The look on his face after coming off didn't suggest he would want to play each week but in a less demanding league he would still do a job. I just meant we should give him an option rather than sacking him off as his level has dropped.
The 5th round match against Norwich will take place on Wednesday 4th March. Should be on the weekend. It's priced the same as the Southampton game, which was £25 for adults, £15 for kids, £20 for OAPs and young adults (18-21). Family of four for £50, which explains both the large amount of kids there yesterday and the fairly poor atmosphere. Wasn't helped by the dogshit performance, of course.
It was hard to know where to start about last night....actually,having pondered it overnight, it isn't. There's not too much wrong with the heart of this team. Having been outplayed for more than an hour,we scored 2 goals late on and won...having done something fairly similar against Citeh on Sunday. Teams with poor attitudes don't do that once, let alone twice. So, there are problems..yes, injuries, form, selection and team set-up are all major problems...but how badly does Dier have to play before Skippy gets selected? I have sympathy with Mourinho over the loss of Sissoko. Lo Celso, Lamela, etc. but not if he keeps picking Dier to start. At this point, he's an option off the bench, if we're trying to hold a result, only. If Skippy and Gedson are fit enough to be on the bench, Dier's got no business starting matches..even more so alongside a patently unfit Ndombele. If we pick that midfield again, we're going to take a stuffing off someone and despite all the injuries, it's not necessary.
Great to see young Cirkin on the bench again. Local boy from our local school. Pity we haven't been in a position to give him a five-minute debut in either of the games when he's been there. At least it means Parrott has someone in his age group to talk to for the 90 minutes.......
Watched the highlights and have to say that Son puts the fear up me with his stuttering run up for penalties
please log in to view this image Yes, since he would have had a tap in if he could have stayed on his feet, and the picture clearly shows the foul. Takeaways: 1. Keepers shouldn't wear brightly colored gloves 2. What is and isn't a pen may be nearly or completely invisible to VAR. 3. Only use VAR for those decisions it can rule accurately on.
