Get a grip @brb People should be able to hold a conversation in any language they want to. All people need to do is to respect other people’s cultures as they like theirs to be respected.
I disagree. Respecting culture is also respecting the presence of the people you are within the company of. I'm sure if anyone on here started writing in another language, they would soon be told to fook off, or be completely ignored.
So you would like to hear 2 people speaking in broken english and failing to understand each other? obviously there is comedy value to that.
I never said that and I never said anything whatsoever about broken English, you are making up your own narratives. I said within a company ie business, where they can speak perfect English, but for some rude reason decide to engage in their native language. Maybe if you learned to read before commenting it might help.
No, I just don’t care if people want to talk to each other in their own language, in their own time on their break. That has nothing to do with culture.
Language is intrinsic to culture. Some countries are fighting to protect the culture of their language that gets eroded through time, especially with tourism. In Benidorm the government even had to set up special classes for Brits, who couldn't speak Spanish, and it's regarded as rude not to have some knowledge in the native language of the area. I'll happily speak out about people not adapting to the language of the country they are in and encourage only using their own language with a consciousness to when it is respectful to do so, that is not whilst in the company of others when you are fluent, everyone is then able to engage, even if only through listening - the custom would normally be otherwise, can I have a word quitely, meaning in a private place, because it may be of a personal nature. It should not either become a norm anywhere (accept in extreme cases) to supply translators, where people basically just cannot be bothered to learn the language of the country they are residing in.
Why? Are people not allowed an alternative view, too much racism gets attached to stuff when you dare speak out. I disapprove in the nature of the letter, but I do not disapprove entirely on the content of people learning to speak English when they come to the UK. Much the same if we lived somewhere else, we also make the effort to learn the language of that country, ie the example I gave Benidorm.
but at least you made the effort. Everyone should do, anywhere in the world, this is not just a British/English argument, nationalities throughout the world I dare say all have the same problems, of people being too lazy to learn or infecting the language, albeit i accept language evolves.
Common decency dictates that if you choose to move to another country , you lean their language IMHO . If your parents are ethnic minorities and you are brought up in that country they went to , bloody sure you should speak the language . As BRB says , you are a Spaniard , and some ex-pat rocks up fully expecting you to speak HIS / HERS Mother Tongue , totally disrespectful IMHO .
Silly but classic example . Years ago we were on a booze cruise . None of us spoke French , none wanted to go and order the drinks . Mate went up and asked for for 2 cafa au lait , et trois beers please . French barman replied " Pints or 1/2 pints " . He then went on to thank my mate for at least MAKING THE EFFORT .
The example you raised in relation to people talking in their own language on their break doesn’t mean they can’t be bothered to learn the language. It can be just comforting to speak to someone without the pressure of making sure you’re speaking the language correctly together. You’re getting worked up by making assumptions of what I mean. I agree that if you move to a different nation that you learn the language and embrace the culture. But on the other hand, it’s human nature to enjoy comfort, and speaking your language of birth is a comfort.
I can speak English, but to hell if I can spell the words correct, can I stay, in Englishland (EU Free) Seriousy if I went to live in a foreign country (London), I would dam well make sure I could speak the language and accept its customs
Can't speak for anyone else , but if I was on a break at work and a few people started to talk in their mother tongue , I would feel awkward . Being totally honest here My problem , almost certainly , but that's how I feel . .
