He is starting to click, which leaves us with a dilemma. Do we carry on with him gradually improving or do we use Marv who I think is a better player but risk hurting Obertan's confidence.

Fergie was suffering from cramp for quite a bit of extra time I think. Everyone was kicking off at the 'time wasting' so the ref wanted to usher him off. Guessing Pardew didn't want to risk playing with only 10 men for any period of time, so moved Ober to left back to cover for Fergie, as we didn't wanna be essentially a man down in defence! That's what I was reckoning anyway <whistle>

But his 'shot' was terrible. I cringed, I really did.

Overall I wouldn't say he was terrible, just nothing special. Massively outshone by Marveaux, who I agree should probably start. Obertan seemed to work better when he came on against Arsenal, to essentially just run at the defence. His speed could murder defences in the 80th or so minute. Marveaux's excellent vision and crossing is needed throughout!

My opinion on Obertan is that he is improving and growing in confidence as each game passes, I thought he was one of the star performers against Villa along with Cabaye, Jonas and Taylor.

I really do think he will just get better and better and deserves a chance to shine, remember Marveaux's main appearances have both been against lower league opposition, not trying to take anything away from him but we haven't really seen him play against premier league players yet, he definitely deserves a crack though, which is why maybe if Obertan dips Marveaux should get a chance to step up, but so far I dont think Obertan needs to be dropped from the starting lineup.

Someone else suggested Marv for Jonas, going forward I would say hell yes, but what Jonas offers defensively makes him undroppable IMO, he helps out the LCB and LB so much when he tracks back, also his mazy runs take pressure away from the entire back line, hes very good at holding the ball up and allowing players to get forward also.

Perhaps if Santon lives up to the hype we might not need as much defensive cover and then might be a good time to introduce Marveaux to the left.

Against Aston Villa Marveaux did play right? I remember he looked lively even just for the little time he was on the pitch. Almost setup Cabaye for a goal only for Cabaye to lift it high over the bar.

I think its safe to say Obertan is our Marmite player. From what I have seen I have been impressed and think he is a good player to have in the squad. Having said that there is room for improvement and he is young enough to improve sustantially. I would keep him in for Blackburn as they are slow as **** in both full back positions,if it isn't working bring Marveaux on.

Are you and Pardew trying to organise some sort of buffet?

Marmite & Heinekein! I'm sure you can get those sandwiches at Pret nowadays.

I think Obertan is miles ahead of Routledge who essentially he was brought in to replace. When fit I think Jonas & Marv will be our starting wingers but The Mekon/Obertan (one for the older lads who used to read Dan Dare) is a handy guy to have in reserve and has proved that already this season. And as someone else said an absolute bargain for £3M considering the transfer market at the moment.

I personally think that Jonas has no real end product going forward. Its quite rare we see a goal from him and he rarely gets assists. But he does track back a lot so he is important.

BUT: A wingers a winger and if we are to progress we need an end product. Now Marveuax looks a hot prospect so I aint gonna say much about him. But I think Jonas hides behind his work rate and lacks any quality in the final third.

This is why I would seriously consider keeping Obertan on the RW and play Marv on the left. Maybe dropping Jonas for a couple of weeks might give him the kick up the backside to practice on his end product. How many times have we seen him run up the wing, take on 2 players get past them and then his cross goes to the keeper/straight to the first defender. Or his shot is woeful. He is then knackered to track back!

I wasnt to keen on Obertan when he first came, but hes actually good on the ball and a confidence player. If he keeps pinging in crosses after taking on a player and best gets on the end of them. He will be afforded the odd lack of tracking back.

I'm a fan of his footballing abilities and his massively large head.

I hope that Obertan does well for us. He is a young lad that has potential, but I am not convinced yet.

He's started 5 games for us and had no pre season.

Honestly some people just jump on players straight away if they don't like the look/style of them or if someone else tells them they're **** they believe it.

The lad needs games and time and something called patience

EDIT: I realise this article is pro Obertan just going off general comments I hear at matches and on here

Wow. Never thought I'd see this day again. We're disagreeing over what players should start and which is our best line up. 4/5 months ago there was only really one formation and one team to put out, and we all agreed on that within about 5 minutes.

    I like it.

I think we can all agree one one thing though. Keep Shola away from the starting XI

Not only that, Marveauxs had two games against lower league opposition plus one sub appearance and we're now saying he's hugely superior. Theres occasions where we as fans just need to give players some time and let the manager pick the team. If after a few months its clearly not working then you can moan, but this knee jerk stuff just isn't helpful.

And the bench, then Pardew won't be tempted to bring him on as a sub

Think that a lot of people are being harsh on Gutierrez. You shouldn't forget that most of the time when he creates openings, he is fouled and wins us free kicks.
But imagine if both Obertan and Marveaux improve, we'll have 3 class wingers, which is something really rare outside the Top 4 <party>...

Agree that Obertan should keep his place for Blackburn (maybe Marveaux in the hole?) better to have Obertan and Jonas running at Salgado and Givet, maybe winning penalties/free kicks, rather than Marveaux putting great crosses in only for us to not win any headers against Dann and Samba.

That was my point above. The Blackburn game suits Obertan IMO. I think Pardew will realise that, 1 thing I do like about him is he looks at every game on an individual basis before making his team selection/style of play. The first manager we have had to do this since SBR!!
