My comment was obviously over the top and not to be taken completely seriously. However, I don't want him to spend the rest of his career at QPR. I do want him to go, as soon as possible... that is, if we can get a replacement. If we can't get a replacement, I'd like him to be on the bench only. Kelly can be #1 and one of our academy keepers needs to be tried out at some point, to see if they have more to offer than Lumley. Or if we have a decent youngster who's been good out on loan? I don't care that Lumley is "only" 24. In fact, 24 is getting on a bit in terms of him not hitting the kinds of basic levels we need. Let's face it, based on what we've seen of him, would you say he's a sturdy League 1 goalkeeper? I wouldn't. He's an acceptable L2 keeper at best. By now, he would have shown better glimpses if he had a decent keeper in him. How many penalties has he saved? How many goals can we say were conceded after blunders by him? What position in the league would we be in without his mistakes? How long should we wait for him to come good? Lastly, I would never personally attack him or make nasty comments where I thought he would see them. But I don't want his cock ups to cost us any more than he already has.
Talking of experts maybe I should learn the difference between Clive Allen and Kevin Gallen! I will post what Clive said.
Sorry Col it has now been taken down... Maybe one for the conspiracy thread. Basically he said our defend was crap for the first goal and the keeper was at fault for second and third... in a more colourful way.
I have to say that in Lumley's defence, it was the defence or non existent defence that left him in the brown stuff. Goal 3..2 free headers...where was the marking? Goal 2 - if in doubt head it or wack it out. Don't put it in the air...that leaves you vulnerable. Goal 1 - should have been our free kick I struggle to see who could have done better with a defence like that in front of them
He was partly at fault for the 2nd goal twice, by his poor clearing kick (one of many) straight to a Brentford player, then by going out for Cameron's balloon, hesitating as he does a lot, and getting caught neither collecting it or sticking.
He needs to improve his distribution and regain his confidence, and I'd be prepared to give him a chance to do that rather than write him off at the age of 24, which is still young for a 'keeper. Kelly should take over as number one for the time being, though.
Kelly has been pretty dire when replacing Lumley thus Lumley keeping his spot recently. We have probably two of the poorest goalies in the Championship. My natural assumption was the Dieng would come back(my Donny mate said he has been excellent) however as this loan has been extended again must assume that we are near to securing a goalie that can actually command his 6 yard box.How do Brentford acquire top goalkeeper and Warburtons solution is oh I worked with Kelly once nice chap he will do. Can add Wallace, Ball and have a penalty Barbet to that list. Then players hasn't worked with but must be great cos they are with premier league clubs Amos, Smith and Mlakar then suddenly really need to question summer acquisitions. On the flip side some footy MW has got us playing has been amazing. Maybe we need a top scout system aka Brentford and leave MW to manage, not use his "contacts" to bring in very average players
sad that the police moved into the beehive after the game sending five mini buses full of police to throw qpr fans out of the pub this was not fair as there were zero incidents
I remain a huge Warburton fan but couldn't agree more about questionable transfers and transfer policy. I'm still glass half full on the subject of Lumley (he's young and needs a break) and Kelly (he's had a decent game or two amongst the dross).
I can think of Kelly, Barbet, Angel, Masterson, Cameron, Ball, Pugh who we bought last summer for next to nothing I believe (500k for Barbet, the rest free). Not bad at so little cost, and gave us both some needed experience, useful squad players, and in Masterson one for the future at least.
I know he's not spent much but I'd worry a little about trusting him with any cash that we do have. It's his judgement on transfers that is a concern. Rangel and Cameron (and Wells) were known quantities from the previous season and were not identified by Warburton. It's too early to assess Masterson, I don't rate Pugh, the jury's out on Kelly, Kane can't defend, Barbet has decent games when he's not giving away penalties (which he does when he's been caught out), Smith is a dud, Mlakar hasn't made the grade, Wallace's first couple of appearances were a bit of a disaster (although he's improved in recent outings) and Amos often lets the game pass him by. I like Ball (except against Brentford) and both Barbet and Wallace could still come good. I'm not saying it's a definite weakness but there's enough evidence to say that he shouldn't be allowed a free hand in transfers, especially when it comes to recruiting his "old boys". I certainly wouldn't trust him unsupervised with my life savings!
What's up with not liking Pugh? From what I've seen he's decent, if not a world beater, and I imagine a good mentor for some of our younger attacking midfielders.
When I've seen him play (I have a season ticket but rarely travel away), he's been fairly anonymous: done nothing wrong but not made much of an impression.
Yes, we have a sensible management structure, provided the right processes are followed and the right authorities applied. However, where a manager is allowed to bring in so many "old faces" that he knows, one worries that he has undue influence (Harry Redknapp anyone?). This is particularly true where our business model is meant to be based on developing young talent in house.
Well we sent in increasing bids apparently late in the last window, for the Aberdeen CD, but stopped at £2.5 or £3 million when the last bid was rejected, and they were, so the rumours said, still demanding millions more. Maybe that was an example of the right processes and budget control being used, when everybody knew we really needed a competent CD. And still do....
