Why the chances of a US Grand Prix in Austin look bleak http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/64620.html Ecclestone ready to drop Austin GP from 2012 calendar as circuit disputes escalate http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96270
Maybe he would rather now have the US GP in New York now they have put forward a plan? Why people are so desperate to do business with him is beyond belief. He has no loyalty to either current circuits or new ones and seems prepared to ditch anyone if more money comes along from somewhere else. How many races actually make money these days?
It's crazy when a venue pays for the privilege of having somebody come use it's facilities. Why anybody would want to host an F1 race is beyond me. There's nothing but a massive loss of cash for the tracks.
Austin circuit chiefs willing to delay debut grand prix to 2013 http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96303 ---- In the statement, which came after Ecclestone told the Press Association that the event will be scrubbed from the schedule by the FIA, Circuit of the Americas president Steve Sexton said that the breathing space of a year would help the venue get matters in order. "We have been excited for and working towards a 2012 USGP race and now understand that Mr Ecclestone is interested in moving the Austin race to 2013," he said. "We know the US market is important to the teams and their sponsors and 2013 certainly allows time for the Circuit of the Americas to be ready." A shift of date to 2013 would mean that the Austin event would take place in the same year as the inaugural New Jersey Grand Prix, which is pencilled in for June that season as part of a double-header with the Canadian GP. Event promoter Tavo Hellmund acknowledged in a press conference that the circuit had been in breach of its contract with Ecclestone, but remained optimistic that the situation could be salvaged. "This project needs to meet its obligations to Formula 1," Hellmund was quoted as saying by the Statesman newspaper. "I'm hoping we can get this back on the road." ----
Well there's a bright side at least. However they shouldn't not build the track just because Eccelstone is a greedy SOB. MotoGP wants to race there as well.
It would make sense... It's not like it's a track sat in the middle of a desert or in a country with no love for motor sport. They'll attract racing to it, even if Bernie does pull a fast one.
http://en.espnf1.com/usa/motorsport/story/66149.html Austin confirms new deal to save US Grand Prix The Circuit of the Americas has agreed a new deal with Bernie Ecclestone to ensure the 2012 US Grand Prix goes ahead. Organisers of the race were given until December 7 to find the money to pay this year's sanctioning fee and agree to Ecclestone's terms. On deadline day the FIA announced that the race would remain on the calendar and soon after the circuit issued a press release confirming the news. "Mr. Ecclestone received his check today for the USGP," Red McCombs, a founding partner of the circuit said in a statement. "We want to thank the fans supporting us, the local officials and businesses that have encouraged us, the state of Texas, Circuit of The Americas' staff and Bernie himself." Fellow founding partner Bobby Epstein added: "Our investors have believed all along that this project has tremendous benefit for our region, and provides a strong economic engine for the future. We remain committed to reaching our goal of being valuable community partners as we establish a platform for sports and entertainment. We're glad that Tavo [Hellmund]'s vision of bringing F1 to the people of Texas will become a reality." The statement added that construction at the circuit will resume immediately, with president of the Circuit of the Americas Steve Sexton saying interest in tickets is high. "We have a substantial number of fans who have expressed interest in buying tickets and hospitality, so today is a win for all of them as much as it is for Circuit of The Americas," he added. © ESPN EMEA Ltd. ---- Date Confirmed The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix™, coming November 18, 2012 ----
Hopefully we'll get some passionate fans packing the stands, and some excellent racing on track. It'd be a rarity for a f1 circuit built in the last 10 years!
