It only took the assassination of Franz Ferdinand for things to kick off a little over 100 years ago.

Have you ever read Ben Elton’s novel about the Franz Ferdinand assassination?

It’s about a bloke called Archie Duke who shot an ostrich because he was hungry.

    Actually it’s not.

I can’t stand Ben Elton. I though his stand up stuff was utter ****e. But his novels are often interesting. He’s not a great writer but he comes up with good ideas and concepts.

If you’re interested in that period of history and the repercussions of WWI then you’ll probably enjoy his book about it. It’s called Time and Time Again.

Only Iran have been the West’s allies in the fight against ISIS.

They were the US’s ally in the battle with Iraq.

This ridiculous notion that the geo politics of the region is as simple as ‘good guy’ / ‘bad guy’ is inane beyond belief.

What the Yanks did with that assassination was to lure him to Iraq - an independent sovereign state, and then wiped him out on foreign soil.

It’s akin to Russia doing the same in London to Pompeo. It was reckless and without strategy, it was also nothing more than a dead cat, aimed at distracting the US from Trumps impeachment.

Please give us your understanding of the build up to what happened, and why.

If you like, you can start with US support for Saddam Hussein in the Iran/Iraq war.

    Yeah I know.

I Didn't say one side was good or bad. I said one side is incredibly powerful and the other isn't.

I simply don't believe we should get involved in any capacity. The US has made this decision without any consultation, if they go to war I believe they should go it alone.

    obviously not

but I am highly dubious that sending British troops to Iran would pass in our parliament, I don't think the public has any appetite for it and the government is still nervous about Iraq.

Typical remainers on here who were adamant that this was happening during their scaremongering campaign.

Fears over chlorinated chicken entering the UK have been dismissed by the Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers.

Ms Villiers said chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-treated beef would not be allowed into the UK under any trade deal with the US.

In an interview with BBC’s Countryfile programme to be broadcast on Sunday 26 January, Ms Villiers said the current EU ban on imports of the products, which are permitted in the US, would be carried over into UK law after Brexit.

The Yanks are liars, don't believe them!!!!

    Oh...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran announced Saturday that its military ‘unintentionally’ shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 aboard.

The statement came Saturday morning and blamed “human error” for the shootdown.

The jetliner, a Boeing 737 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines, went down on the outskirts of Tehran during takeoff just hours after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at U.S. forces.

Iran had denied for several days that a missile downed the aircraft. But then the U.S. and Canada, citing intelligence, said they believe Iran shot down the aircraft.

The plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries, including 82 Iranians, at least 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians, according to officials.

:emoticon-0177-toivoSaffy, take that **** away from here <cheers>

Iran have admitted to shooting down the jet. Good on them, at least they have admitted it. Russia take note.

They will prosecuting the people that shot it down as well. I expect there will be full media coverage of this....
