I’m guessing Pereyra was sent off for either of Law 12’s reasons I’ve listed. I don’t think there was “excessive force”. Anyone (and I mean you, Fez ) care to elaborate how this could be regarded as a red? SERIOUS FOUL PLAY A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play. VIOLENT CONDUCT Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made. In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible. What does everyone else think of the call, based on the Laws of the Game?
It was a petulant kick at the opponent's ankle when he was on the ground. Ref right on top of it. I'd even say it was childish with no venom so possibly may get overturned or reduced down on appeal. That's if we bother.
A very petulant action - the ball had gone and he had a little kick out at the player. I can see why the ref gave it as a red No idea why he did it... frustration at going 3-0 to 3-3 maybe, but still no need for it.
Well after Lacazette and others getting away with similar there was little choice for the Blazers. It's just one thing after another at the moment, mainly nonsense.
The red card has been overturned The panel were probably forced to watch the Arsenal Leeds game and asked if there were no red card there how can this be a red card Without VAR we would have won 3-1 with no sending off
Well tbh we couldn't argue about the other decisions but at Tranmere we would have done as no VAR would have been used! The ref gave the red card and VAR backed him up wrongly it seems!
Complete lack of consistency. The same problem exists - the technology is fine but those that are watching it and making the decisions are the same incompetent officials. It was a soft red, he flicked his leg out, there was no malice just frustration. I thought it might get downgraded to a one match ban but completely overturned is a surprise but likely thanks to the officials at the Arsenal match!
VAR on this type of decision still requires a subjective view on the seriousness of the offence and it’s still open to different refs to take different views. It’s not possible to achieve total consistency and VAR won’t achieve it as it is operating at present. The on field ref will know what he thinks he has seen, and for that reason is in the best position to review the incident at the pitch side monitor, however it will require him to be big enough to say, I think I got my original call wrong.
Your final point is where many (e.g. Mr Dean) will fall down. But I totally concur. There’s something in the LotG about the “atmosphere” of the game, and referees taking that into account. I don’t quite see how a VAR room elsewhere in the country can do that.
In a way i think bobby knows at present he will only make the bench and should Pedro start to come good then he could fall further down the list .This was one of the few times that i did not care if he got a 3 game ban
It is the ever-present (well, once upon a time it was, now it’s biannual ) threat for a footballer. No one is indispensable, and in time, every one of them will be replaced... Even... eventually... “...cross comes in from Anya...HOGG! ... ”
Problem is we need to replace Deeney the 120% workrate captain rather than Deeney the striker We need a Deeney type in Defence and a Deeney type in midfield all the striker needs to do is show commitment and score goals I still believe we lost 20% of Deeney the striker to get Deeney the 120% captain But no-one brought in recently has got anywhere near him
