    Saw him play in a night match at Bolton late 1962. Man U got slugged 3-0. 46,000 there. Made me wonder how they got that many in when I went to a virtually unchanged stadium 9 years later with City. Though, even more amazingly, their record crowd there is over 8,000 more than Liverpool’s. Wouldn’t like to have been in Burnden Park with just under 70,000 in there.

    I am told that the highest ever league attendance at home for Hull City was against Rotherham United on Christmas Day 1948. The official attendance was a few hundred off 50,000 although one match site statistic gives an attendance of a few hundred short of 55,000.

    Rotherham United hold a unique record in the 4 tiers of the Football League which under present conditions will remain forever. Any idea?

    At the time £40k per player was considered well above the odds of the day in the old 3rd division.

    If Rotherham put out their normal match day team then it will be a tough game, they are going well at present, and it will be a tough challenge. However, even with a few players who are not in our first team we still should be able to put out a team capable of beating them.

    I would go with:

    Ingram
    Pennington, Taff, McLoughlin, Fleming
    Honeyman Kane Batty
    Bowler Eaves Lewis-Potter

    Hmm. With you saying current format, I was thinking it could relate to two points for a win, or play offs. But I'm going to go for the most times finishing bottom of the league without being relegated. I'm thinking of the time when you had to be voted for re-election.

    We sold 55,000 tickets for the game, an all time third tier record. The reason for the actual crowd being 49,000 was a bus drivers strike. Amazing that many got there when so few had cars. Wouldn’t happen nowadays. Heaven knows how early they left the game as their tea was waiting.<laugh>
    We have the highest average for a third tier season, 37,000. In the list of top averages we are just one place below Leeds and the only one in the top 25 to have achieved their highest average outside the top flight.

    You are on the right track with 2 points for a win. They hold the record for the most points gained by a relegated team when there were 2 points for a win.

    <ok>

    Aye, I didn't think my final guess was right, but I recall there is/was a team that got lucky a couple of times due to the team that had won promotion from the conference not being allowed in, so plumped for that. Rotherham didn't ring a bell though.

    Rotherham were the first club to sell pukka pies in the ground though. <ok>

    Yes, I never lived down the shame of Man U fans telling us we were buying success at the time.

    My husband thinks it was an early kick-off around 11 am. His dad had a car and they could have arrived home in time for Christmas dinner! Any old programmes or memories to verify the early kick-off?

    Yours was. My father in law, a Man Utd “fan’ said to me at a family do when we were heading out of the bottom flight that I couldn’t be happy with our buying our way out of the division. I heard my wife groan as she knew what was going to happen next. And it did.
