Saw him play in a night match at Bolton late 1962. Man U got slugged 3-0. 46,000 there. Made me wonder how they got that many in when I went to a virtually unchanged stadium 9 years later with City. Though, even more amazingly, their record crowd there is over 8,000 more than Liverpool’s. Wouldn’t like to have been in Burnden Park with just under 70,000 in there.
I am told that the highest ever league attendance at home for Hull City was against Rotherham United on Christmas Day 1948. The official attendance was a few hundred off 50,000 although one match site statistic gives an attendance of a few hundred short of 55,000. Rotherham United hold a unique record in the 4 tiers of the Football League which under present conditions will remain forever. Any idea?
If Rotherham put out their normal match day team then it will be a tough game, they are going well at present, and it will be a tough challenge. However, even with a few players who are not in our first team we still should be able to put out a team capable of beating them. We sold 55,000 tickets for the game, an all time third tier record. The reason for the actual crowd being 49,000 was a bus drivers strike. Amazing that many got there when so few had cars. Wouldn’t happen nowadays. Heaven knows how early they left the game as their tea was waiting. We have the highest average for a third tier season, 37,000. In the list of top averages we are just one place below Leeds and the only one in the top 25 to have achieved their highest average outside the top flight.

Aye, I didn't think my final guess was right, but I recall there is/was a team that got lucky a couple of times due to the team that had won promotion from the conference not being allowed in, so plumped for that. Rotherham didn't ring a bell though. Rotherham were the first club to sell pukka pies in the ground though.
