Okay, so I'm bored! Here goes...(This is just Premier League matches)

    Arsenal - 17
    Fulham - 78
    QPR - 82
    Villa - 68
    Wigan - 13
    West Ham - 64
    Sunderland - 89
    Tottenham - 65
    Fulham - 72
    Arsenal - 90
    Blackburn - 90
    Birmingham - 75
    Bolton - 90
    Everton - 85
    West Brom - 18

That is a total of 996 minutes and in that time he has 9 goals. So Leon Best, in the Premier League, scores every 110 minutes. So almost a goal a game, therefore he is even more impressive than his goals per game suggest.

The three games that are down as 90 minutes are because he was substituted in stoppage time. One of these days he may complete a full game.

I think what aginairrr is trying to say is that his record is actually better than what 9 in 12 suggests

So basically it's 9 goals in the equivalent of just under 11 games (accounting for stoppage time).

So basically what these stats show is that:

9 goals from 12 starts = 1 goal every 1.33 games (but flawed as ignores sub apps)
9 goals from 15 games = 1 goal every 1.66 games (but flawed as the sub apps were only brief)
9 goals from 996 mins on the pitch = 1 goal every 1.23 games (shows how well Best has done but not really easily comparable to other players without too much time on your hands)

So 1 goal every 1.23 games... awesome!

Yet he's only actually scored in 6 of the 18 premiership games he's played in.
(3 were for southampton as a teenager)

TBH I dont mind us switching the strikers during every game. We've got 5 of 'em (not inc Ranger) who all wanna show us what they can do. They all have thier own qualities. Altho Shola looks like an absolute dog..............Hes been waiting to be Toon No.1 striker his whole life and this is what he does with the opportunity?!!

    Loser

Even if this stat actually meant anything.. (which it doesn't) - and even if he'd only manage one goal in each of those games, 1 in 3 is still an impressive record for a striker in the PL.... some (crouch, Shola, Gyan, Heskey, Zamora, Bentdner etc) don't even manage that.

Wasnt havin a go at him, just sayin, u've got these stats sayin he gets a goal every 110 minutes or every 1.24 game or whatever but he doesnt does he, I agree it is an admirable record, dont really rate the lad though. f I was to have a go at anything it would be for his poorly timed runs/lack of awereness of opposition defensive lines

You're being harsh here. What would you prefer a striker that doesn't play particularly well but bags crucial goals for you or would you prefer a quality striker who has chance after chance due to his excellent dribbling and movement etc. only to miss all the chances? I know which I'd prefer and Best is doing very well and has gained us a fair few points in his starts.

Also, he has had two offside goals in these starts I believe, both of which were onside. (Arsenal last season and another one, I think this season, which I can't remember)

Actually I remember now, it was against Scunthorpe. Ignore that.

err... on average, he scores a goal every 110 mins... fact. Sometimes he scores more often, sometimes less often, but on average 110 mins so I don't get what you mean.

If I were to criticise him for anything it would be not scoring against the big teams. I think he's only managed a goal against Arsenal from the so called "big" teams.

If you look at my OP you will notice that he hasn't actually played against Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool or Chelsea yet. So we can't really judge him on that.

Right then, simple yes or no answers please.

Is Leon Best a first rate striker ?

The stats say definitely. But somehow it's hard to agree

No. The stats say he is but when you watch him you see that there is so much of his game that is below standard for the highest level.

    Stats can be misleading.
