At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, has anyone else heard about the spike in the number of postal votes for this year's election compared to previous ones? 2010 election: 15.3% 2015 election: 16.4% 2017 election: 18% 2019 election: 38% Now cast your minds back to the day before people went to the polls, where Laura Kuntssberg appeared on the Daily Politics to say the postal votes didn't look good for Labour (and didn't lose her job, as saying that either broke electoral law or was simply her lying to the public...) as well as Dominic Raab being filmed on the campaign trail saying he'd seen the postal votes with a particularly assholish smirk on his face, those events take on a different context when looking at the percentage of postal votes more than doubling in the space of two years
A rise of over 100% in postal votes? I'd like to see that from an official source. Time will tell, I guess.
Thanks. So in his poll 38% of people claimed to have voted by post. I don't think it's too surprising that more Postal votes were Conservative. Tory voters tend to be older and more experienced.
I didn't bother to vote in 2017 because I thought Mrs May would walk it. In 2019 I re registered my postal vote to make sure that I didn't make the same mistake again. I bet there are many like me. Notwithstanding the above, elector ID like in NI is the answer.
By definition people who vote by post can't show ID. Abuse of postal votes is much easier than personation. No surprises which one Tories want to make easier.
So would I, but if it was a conspiracy I would have thought the Tory vote in them would be much higher. But if they were targeted at specific constituencies that would be very suspicious.
I'd be more than happy to provide a copy of my passport, driving licence or even give them my finger print if I were asked.
I wasn't casting aspersions at your vote. But by definition you can't check who actually made a postal vote or if it was made under duress.
Currently one has to sign it, and yes I know a signature can be forged. That's why fingerprints might be a good idea. Under duress? We all were listening to 3.5 weeks of bullscrap from all sides.
There has been a big shift to the right in recent times. The kind of tyrannical government we despise around the world exists right here. They just talk with posh voices and come across as harmless buffoons from an Ealing comedy. But they are ruthless - make no mistake. However, with an upsurge in nationalist feelings buoying them, they are sympathetically portrayed as the voice of the people. It's only when enough of the proletariat are adversely affected that there will be an outcry. And even then it's clear that certain sections will tolerate economic and social disadvantage because they believe that the government is an advocate of their nationalist tendencies. I can't see it ending well well because Brexit will cause hardship to many and we won't be giving two fingers to those bloody foreigners as many expect. In fact, we might have to be even more conciliatory. Strange times. .
