He's got to be hasn't he? I'm not ganna suggest I know much about pre war sunlan other than we were much, much more successful than we are now. Still tho, no world club cup winners as far as I'm aware. Has there ever been a more successful born and bred mlf than hendo?
Sunderland were world club champions they beat hearts, can't remember the date but it was donkeys years back.
I vividly recall many 'over the road' believing that liverpool had paid way over the odds and he wouldnt be missed. Then again many of the same said kirchoff was the worst player they had ever seen and would never make a premier league player ( after all of one game ) and that the mooted 25m offer from everton for Kone was both derisory and insulting. Ho hum
I love seeing the lad do so well. He’s not flash, he’s not gonna be doing tricks and blowing minds but he’s got such leadership in him, what we wouldn’t give for some of that. I think he does us proud, a succession of big name managers and he always gets picked, Liverpool and England, you can see that even this team of absolutely top class players look to him. He is a very tidy player, one of those that just sits in the team and makes it easy for others to do their job. Hopefully we'll get to see him lift a trophy with England in the summer.
Done very well for a Farra lad(albeit i was there a few years before him) Who'd have thought a lad that went to my school would be picking up the trophies he has - fair play to him - would love to see him back in a sunderland shirt at some point.
If you are including the surrounding "coalfield communities" and not limiting it to Sunderland itself, I think Bob Paisley (Hetton) and Alan Kennedy (Shiney Row) ,both SAFC fans in their youth, have more medals. Paisley as Liverpool manager had 6 first division champions medals (including 1 as a player), 3 League Cup wins, 3 European Champions cups and 1 UEFA cup. Kennedy 5 first division champions medals, 2 European Champions cups, and 4 league cup. So Henderson has a way to go but could still overtake Paisley and Kennedy.
The game was played on 27th April 1895, and was described as the "Championship of the World title match". Sunderland won the game 5–3 and were crowned "Champions of the World".
Yep we were world champions ! the thing is there was only us and Hearts who played in the competition. Looks like Hendo will win the premier league, f a cup and maybe another champions league and might come back to us hopefully.
Think the only way he’ll come back to us is if we are competing top half of championship. Doesn’t look like this is gonna happen any time soon.
